Are the both same or is one better than the other? I have a cockatiel that has been sneezing more than usual. I was told that i could use ornacycline for this. However, the pet store only has tetracycline in my area. Are they about the same thing? Also, she is getting ready to lay eggs, is this safe for her?

I have used tetracycline for my chickens when they are sick. Its an antibiotic so it could help....BUT the other poster is right, you should get the bird checked out by a vet first. You need to make sure you are treating the bird with the right medicine, or if you even need medicine at all.

I dont know about the eggs thing but I think it would be ok. Ive had hens on antibiotics while laying and it didnt hurt HER, but we wouldnt eat the eats and if you suspect they may be fertile I dont know what would happen.

Another reason to ask a vet. They can tell you all that.

BTW its not always best to trust the advise of some people who answer here. A lot of them just BS. lol.

GOOD LUCK and I hope you can figure out what's wrong with your cockatiel!!!!! :)

I'm no vet (but a student of medicine), but I do know that using tetracycline in humans can cause teeth to turn yellow (it gets deposited in the calcium). And since eggs shells are made of calcium...it might make then appear yellowish. However, I don't know whether or not it will be safe for the bird.

As for as the difference between ornacycline and tetracycline, they are both in the same drug class and have similar mechanisms of action (ornacycline is actually a derivative of tetracycline).

DO NOT USE EITHER!!!

The over the counter medications RARELY work and usually make them WORSE!

Take your bird to an Avian Vet for a diagnosis and PROPER medication.

Take her to an avian vet. Sneezing is not necessarily a symptom of illness
