Our Cockatiel is 6 months old, VERY tame, rarely spends time in his cage other than to sleep, and has been hand raised. His wings were clipped when we first got him, but we let them grow back as a birds natural insticnt is to fly, and we let him fly around our apartment. Last night he went wondering out on the balcony as the door had been accidently left slightly open, and he went under the railing, couldn't find his way back, and flew off.

Does anyone know if tame cockatiels have great survival skills? Do they normally try to find crowded places around humans or do they try to find other birds? He wasn't the best flyer, and I'm concerned other birds may attack him!

We have posted up fliers, contacted vets and animal agencies in our neighbourhood, is there anything else we can do? Also, if anyone tell me what thier natural urges are, and what they are most likely to do?

Pls if anyone can help it would be appreciated!

The bird is a seed eater and may do well if the weather is not too cold . He wont be afraid of humans and may approach someone else .

He should find seed at most birdfeeders around. If he is not flying well he may not go very far .

You could try putting his cage outside where he might find it . Its a known safe place for him.

You have done everything you can at the moment .

There are certainly predators around that would be a problem like cats and some birds of prey. Another bird might not recognise him as food though .

Your best chance is that he will find his way back or find a bird feeder and person that will take him to animal rescue.

Good luck

I'm very sorry but if you don't find your bird VERY SOON! Like in about half a day and your bird is outside, he most likey will die. The bird has been with you for 6 months and that's enough time for it to get used to having everything GIVEN to him. He won't have good survival skills. ANd he definatley won't know how to get it's own food. I'm very sorry but what i say is 100% true! I hope you find it soon! Good Lluck

Our parakeet got out of his cage and flew up into a nearby tree. My dad called his name and kept calling him to come out of the tree and he flew down and landed on my Dad's shoulder. We were lucky. Hopefully the bird comes back to you.
