Birds - March 2007

I bought a red rump Parakeet several years ago at the Magnolia Bird farm in Corona, Ca. The seller didn't want to sell the bird to me because he claimed that those type of birds wouldn't make good pets but I proved him wrong! My red-rump is pleasant, gets along with the other parakeets and he even gets on my shoulder and lets me scratch his head. Their temperment is similar to cocktails. If you treat it well the bird will accept you into his/her life.

.....not the frozen type..!
We, me an' the mrs, were thinking of getting some chickens. Possibly three or four. Just for the eggs really.
What we want to know is, how difficult are they to keep....how much room do they need...do they make much noise(!)....we also have a dog, soft as a brush though(!)... and any other info that you may think is helpful.
Thanks in anticipation.
Would rather hear it from you, as opposed to plowing through shed loads of books, or sifting through websites.
So no links please.

My bantie is struggling and flexing her body trying to breathe - that's what it looks like anyway. With each breath, she stretchs her neck and opens her mouth up. The only changes are that she went outside for the first time 3 days ago but only pecked at the ground and ate a few stems of grass - nothing had chemicals on it. Also - this is what I'm worried about - we brought in an old old (40 - 50 years old) bale of straw and when I broke it open (in the room with the chicken) there was so much dust - it was as if it almost exploded with dust. That was 4 days ago but I've been using that straw and it's always more dusty to break apart - not as bad as that first day, but still dustier than regular straw. My chicken has been acting sick, flexing her body with each breath, not eating, just sitting/sleeping and looking fluffed up/puffed up for 2 days now. I don't think she will make it because she is now keeping her eyes shut.... But I do want to know why so it doesn't happen again.

I saw some at a funeral home (the birds were the best part of the day) that were, I think, brown and white with these beautiful purple marks on their heads and some other really colorful ones. The funeral home director said that some of them are society finches and other than that he didn't know. I live in Arizona and am willing to drive toward Tucson or Phoenix to buys some beauties if you have any suggestions. Cheap would be great too!!! :) Thank you!

It's sad- if it weren't so sad, it might be a bit comical. But tragically, my girlfriend has lost a few of her pets to wild animal attacks. Her Turkey was attacked about two weeks ago during the night, and she was found dead and lying on her back. Apparently, this has also happened to some of her chickens, as well. Why do birds assume this position when they perish?

They hatched last night....and I was wondering if I need to remove the father from the cage and just leave the mother with the babies???? Or should that only be done if I see the male being aggresive???

I have just inhereted a really nice house but to my absolute horror yesterday i went into the small bedroom and found about 30 flies on the window, they were in the hall upstaires too. i sprayed a strong fly and wasp killer and thought that would be the end of it but alas...l today i have just found (in the upstaires hall only this time) about twenty or so flies dead on the carpet. What could be causing this and where are they coming from. I don't understand how they are getting in so they must be in already... HELP. These are huge by the way.

I got my 2 parakeet a day ago(March 24, 2007). I try to make sure it can trust me. And I really want to make it come on my hand. How do you think I can build the trust and how long do you think it will take? So my main question is how can I train my bird to let it sit on my hand and trust me?

So one of my parakeets was fluffing his feathers, nonactive, not eating, had brown crusties around his beak and neck , a piece of bird seed in his month, in the end he locked up all his muscules, he was fine 2 days ago he was flying around singing, all of a sudden this happened, and then he died in my hands tonight, my other bird seems to be find, so you have any ideas of what it could have been? that way i can make sure the other one is ok!!
