Actually learned about this today in school. The time it takes from fertilization to actually laying the egg can be as short as 24 hours. However, birds can store sperm and use it when it's convenient, so she may just be "holding" it. The reason that it doesn't take very long is because birds are adapted to flight, and in doing so, they need to stay very lightweight, and they can't do that while packing an egg around everywhere she goes! I thought that was neat.

It's possible that she is egg bound which is lethal. The egg gets stuck. Is she trying to lay an egg? There wasn't much information given by you, but I sincerely hope things work out. Have a great day;every day.

Birds enter a trance like state when laying though it can take several hours till they reach this point.Eggs can't get stuck the size is all relative within the female. When she is ready to lay it she will.
