I have a few questions about my budgie and it's biting. It's really young, so I'm not sure of it's gender..I thought it was a male, but lately it's been chewing everything and biting/nipping my finger, so I'm thinking maybe it's a girl. Would it be more typical for a female, or do male budgies do that too, just not as much?

I was also wondering, can a budgie nip be about showing affection too? Because as mine grows used to me, it's been nipping my finger a little more. Not hard at all..very softly. But I'm not sure if nips/bites can also be used to show affection.

And should I continue letting it do so? I'm not sure if doing that will make it more aggressive. I don't give it attention when it bites, just calmy let it, so it's not getting any sort of reward, but it seems to like doing it sometimes. It does 'bite' bite sometimes if I pet it when it's tired or go near it, but it's more to let me know...even then it's pretty gentle.

And I have one more question: do their bites

Hi everyone, Im from India & i luv watching, listening & helping birds. Which is why i've decided 2 setup some birdhouses, bird-feeders & bird-baths as well. But, all the information given in the net is mostly about american birds...nothing about indian birds or in general. So, if there's any good birder( indian birder will help) , I'd really appreciate it if u cud help me. I'd like 2 know if a backyard pond or a feeder is better? what are the various types of feeders & houses 4 birds & when & where do i put them? what food?

My oldest cockatiel baby is 6 weeks old now. The other 2 are 2 and 4 days younger. The mother is laying an egg every 2 days which I have to remove. It's very sad to do this, but I don't want to separate the babies from their parents. I tried it and they went crazy. The parents called them and they tried their best to return. I let the babies out to fly around the room every other day. The parents have never been out on their own. I adopted them when they were a few months old. The babies also try eating of the different things I put in the cage. The cage is 90x65x70 is it big enough for 5 cockatiels?

The weather just changed and it got considerably warmer today than it has been in a while...so how can you tell if your bird is hot or uncomfortable with the temperature?

I had 2 female cockateils for 5 yrs. Recently got a 3 rd female. My 1st bird periodically lays 4 unfertile eggs. This yr it was only 2 eggs and they were dried up inside. I realized she was low on calcium an added a mineral bar and cuttle bone. I also changed her diet to pellets rather than seed. The 3 birds seem to get along reasonable well and we put them together slowly. My 1st bird is now plucking her feathers from the underside of the front of her wings. She has a bare patch on the inside of both wings. Do you think it's stress or a health issue. The other two birds fight for 1st place in the pecking order but this one just sits back and waits for them to finish eating then she eats her fill. For now I put vasoline on it and put her in a separate cage. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thousands of people each day feed waterfowl at lakes, ponds, and rivers. I would think a majority of them feed the waterfowl bread. How does bread affect their heath and what would be a better choice?

I found a cockatiel, he had been attacked by crows.

He did not have any of his tail feathers (to me it looked like they'd been chewed, broken off) But he had all his top feathers. His beak isn't smooth it has lines over it ( dont know if its relevant but it makes him look older)

I took him to the vet, the vet said he "looked old, breathed like an old bird, but has no tail feathers so must be young"

The vet didn't even know the difference between, growing tail feathers and ones that had been broken through a struggle.

SO, my question is, with cockatiels - if they haven't yet grown their tail feathers completely - then wouldn't their top feathers not haven't fully grown yet.

I got a young cockatiel, her tail had grown but her top feathers weren't very long yet - because she was so young..Which feathers grow first?

I think this vet just wasn't a bird person!!

hope this question wasn't confusing

I noticed this a few days ago. My mother thought he was molting but we have several other birds and when they molt they loose their underfeathers, the soft ones.. He is a little over a year old, i had him since he was 5 months old. His name is "Houd".If it does look like he is, can anyone give me some advice on how to stop him? I spend atleast 1 hour with him everyday, he has his own large cage, lots of toys and lives in a room with the other birds. Here are some pictures:
( on his stomach/crop is where it looks like he is picking. The part below where it is brown is because he was just taking a bath.)
