I had 2 female cockateils for 5 yrs. Recently got a 3 rd female. My 1st bird periodically lays 4 unfertile eggs. This yr it was only 2 eggs and they were dried up inside. I realized she was low on calcium an added a mineral bar and cuttle bone. I also changed her diet to pellets rather than seed. The 3 birds seem to get along reasonable well and we put them together slowly. My 1st bird is now plucking her feathers from the underside of the front of her wings. She has a bare patch on the inside of both wings. Do you think it's stress or a health issue. The other two birds fight for 1st place in the pecking order but this one just sits back and waits for them to finish eating then she eats her fill. For now I put vasoline on it and put her in a separate cage. Has anyone else had this problem?

Cockatiels may have itchy skin and pick only under their wings when they have an infection from a parasite called Giardia. Your veterinarian won't know this without lab tests.

Your vet will want to rule out hypothyroidism, infection, or disease as a cause of the feather picking.

And don't ever put Vasoline on your bird, that is toxic to them.
Never give over the counter meds or creams unless the Vet instructs you too.

If you care about your bird you will contact an Avian Vet and have the bird checked over.

I have had many birds to date, 2 cockatiels, one just passed away :( and many parakeets, and i have never seen this problem! I would stick with what you are doing and just put the bird who is feather picking in a seperate cage. It might be a combination of stress and oher things. Do you have other pets in the house? Dogs, cats? If you do, make sure you seperate the birds from them if they don't get along. If it gets really bad, you have to take her to the vet, because it will just get worse and the vet will know what to do for the baby. Best of luck to you and I hope your tiel gets better!

This sounds like they have a problem with lice to me.

Get a bird protector, and cover the cage with a sheet for a few days.

If the problem persists after keeping the cahe covered three or four days Take them to the vet.

Get your bird to the vet ASAP. Have her checked for a health problem and find out how to get the vasaline off of her!!! That will make her pluck more!

NEVER put ANYTHING that is not okayed by a vet on your bird!!!
