I have just inhereted a really nice house but to my absolute horror yesterday i went into the small bedroom and found about 30 flies on the window, they were in the hall upstaires too. i sprayed a strong fly and wasp killer and thought that would be the end of it but alas...l today i have just found (in the upstaires hall only this time) about twenty or so flies dead on the carpet. What could be causing this and where are they coming from. I don't understand how they are getting in so they must be in already... HELP. These are huge by the way.

Blow flies are fairly large, metallic green, gray, blue or black flies. Common species include the greenbottle flies (Lucilia spp.), black blow fly (Phormia regina), and various Calliphora species. These flies tend to be the most common flies found in and around homes during the warmer months. Adults also may winter behind walls and occasionally are observed within homes during cooler months, but are not reproducing at this time.

The blow flies are scavengers, particularly of animal-based materials. The breed commonly in livestock manure or pet waste and fresh carrion.

The presence of large numbers of blow flies within a home may be due to several reasons. Large numbers of them sometimes occur when a dead animal - usually a mouse or squirrel - dies within the home. The presence of the flies are often preceded by observations of migrating maggots. Although such occurrences are unpleasant, they are usually short-live and self-limiting, as the insects are only capable of breeding on freshly killed animals. Blow flies sometimes are attracted to gas leaks. Also, the presence of blow flies may just result from their seeking shelter, as the cool shade of homes provides favored resting sites for flies that may otherwise be developing outdoors.

Flies don't have a nest. They do however seek out food to eat and places to lay their eggs.Peoples houses offer a great source for both.As well any time you have animals you are also providing a great source of habitat for flies.Any remaining food your horse doesn't eat is a great place for flies to eat.As well the poop the horse leaves becomes great food for flies and their eggs.Reduce the amount of sources of food for flies and their larva and you will help reduce fly numbers.Being the beginning of spring the fly larva which has remained dormant is now hatching. So all you can really do is reduce the food sources for the flies and keep a good swatter handy till the problem diminishes.Good thing about most flies is they have a short life span.

Flies do not have nests; to reproduce, flies lay eggs on rotting meat, garbage, fecal matter, etc. To reduce the number of flies in a home, remove the sources of material on which they can lay eggs. This means keeping garbage covered, keeping dirty dishes in a dishwasher until you have a load ready to wash, keeping trash taken out on a regular basis, and keeping cat boxes clean, among other things. Make sure your outdoor garbage cans are away from your house some distance; pick up any trash that may end up in your yard, no matter the source; clean up animal droppings promptly if there are strays in the neighborhood.

They could simply be cluster flies. At this time of year my home seems to be a magnet to them. If you are the country it's a normal situation, and you have only two options, I'm afraid, one is to have your house cavities sprayed with chemicals by a professional, the other is to spend much of your time pplaying fly badminton with a swatter.

There could be a dead mouse or something and they have pupated in there, hibernated, then are hatching out in the warm weather. They'll be gone soon so just ride it out until you find where they all hatched from. But I'll warn you - maggots lay their eggs on dead things, so its not going to be much fun :(

get a pest control person out - in my experience i've found that things involving insects are best left to the pros.
