We have a bedroom facing the garden. a cute little bird,i don't think it is a sparrow.always pecks the window glass.i just love watching it.but why does it do that?

but can birds really identify themselves in their reflection?
i had kept a bowl of grains on the sill, but it doesn't eat that either.
i assumed that it wants to come inside(it always makes a sound resembling to that of someone knocking the door) and opened the window...but it continues to peck the glass even if it opened.it flies away whenever i go near the window

Some birds will peck at window frames all year round. They find tiny little insects in the corners of the frames to eat. But in early spring, when birds start singing and establishing their territories, we often receive e-mails from people asking why birds are actually knocking on the glass of their windows.

What's normally happening is that the birds are seeing their own reflection in the glass. They assume it's a rival trying to take over their patch, and so they peck at it to try and drive it away.

Another cause could be an ornament of a bird on a window ledge. Again this could be mistaken for a rival.

It's not just houses which receive this treatment either. Shiny car windows are often pecked at in the same way. I once watched a blackbird attacking it's own reflection in a car wing mirror for three days before it finally gave up and moved on.

It must be thinking of making a nest there or in the near area and when the eggs will hatch the bird think that someone would harm them.

He is either responding to his reflection like it's another bird (he thinks he's defending his territory, or looking for a mate), or something in your room is attracting him.
Move or cover anything red, yellow or floral patterned and see if he quits.

It's funny... I asked my husband what he thinks, he thought I was telling him a joke asking me "why?" and then stared at me waiting for the punchline.

It must be adorable. Maybe he's hungry. Try hanging a bird feeder out there I bet he'll love that. Then again... he might just be pecking at his competition -- the bird in the mirror.

Birds defend their territory-esp. in Spring. He thinks, "Who's that handsome devil? I gotta get him outa here before my chick shows up!"

Meanwhile? DON'T see Hichcock's, "The Birds"!

Maybe testing the coolkitten, if he/she is really cool. They say kittens and birds never get along. Maybe if you are really cool, things could change :-)
