My sister has a male and female in the same cage. It is fine but there si the chance of an egg if a dish-shaped object that could be used as a nest is present. They might pay less attention to you however, because they are not as desperate and lonely for a friend, and they might not learn to talk. My sister's still pay attention to us though, and like it when we come in and look at them and whistle to them.

That's true to a degree. Pairs are more difficult to handle, and will have more interest in bonding with each other than they will to you. However, it depends on the individual birds. Your birds may not even bond to each other, may dislike each other, not want to be caged together, and prefer your company anyway.

I've lived with an example like this. I received a bonded pair of lovebirds who adored being together and were very affectionate towards each other. However, they were both very tame and handleable. They were very friendly, sweet, and people oriented, as well as mate-oriented. On the flip side, I have another pair of lovebirds who are very into each other and can't stand being apart. They would much rather be with each other than me, unless of course, they see me with food.

If you work hard towards it and have the time and patience, you can definitely keep both in the same cage and have them both be tame towards you. Even the pair I have that has less interest in me will willingly come to me and reply to my vocalizations. It takes a longer period of time and more work to keep two tame, but it won't necessarily hurt.

What may hurt is that they may breed. If they're blood related, that would be bad because they may produce defective babies. If they're inexperienced parents, the babies will probably die. If the parents are poorly fed, the female may die and the babies may die as a result of malnutrition (sadly very, very common in captive birds). The female may become egg bound and die or need emergency avian vet intervetion. There's a very long list of risks associated with caging a male and female together in breeding terms. If you do cage them together, follow these basic rules to keep them from mating:
Provide no more than 12 hours of daylight. If they have extra daylight, it feels like spring/summer, which is a good breeding period.
Monitor food intake. Feed only what you know they will eat for the day (or until you change the food) because extra food means enough to feed babies.
Don't pet anywhere but the head. Anywhere else is a stimulating area that will encourage mating.
Don't provide any nesting materials or areas (nooks, crannies in or out of the cage that they may find) because they'll, obviously, want to nest and start to.
Provide constant mental stimulation and change. If their cage environment is always changing, they'll love it to keep busy, but they'll know that babies aren't meant to thrive in a busy environment. Do this by changing the toys and perches in and out, putting them in different places, at least once a week.

Wont hurt the birds any but they will bond together and you may not be top bird in their lives after they bond. Same thing goes if you put a mirror in the birds cage they fall in love with their self thinking it's another bird.

they might mate and become over protective. but if your good friends with them they shouldn't bite or anything. if they do become this way, one is probably pregnent. so if you put them in the same cage make sure they have their space between you.

They will love it, but they won't be affectionate with you anymore.
