I was told once that it's better to keep your computer on 24/7 and let it go into sleep mode rather than turn it off. I understand it doesn't use very much electricity and it's better on the components. Now I'm hearing it's better to turn it of like when you go to bed, etc. What is the right answer?

I already have the max ram available (384mb PC133) It only has 3 slots with a maximum of 128mb each. Anyway, what else can be done to increase the performance. Is it possible to swap out the Pentium 3 processor that it comes with for something like a brand new dual core? If not, what else can be done? Video cards, Audio? I put Windows Media Center XP on it and its not running to well. What should I do?

I was going to upgrade my system with a gig of ram and a video card. I was researching about video cards and found out that the PCI slot type is the bottom of the rung but I do not have the cash to buy a new computer and was going to make due with what I have. Any recommendations on video cards and what I should be concerned with (Memory, clock speed, etc…)?

It was working fine, then it stopped. I pulled a memory stick out last night, and that is when it stopped working. I put it back in, and now my computer has no video at all. Any suggestions.

I have an old Dell XPS-T (I think.) desktop. It has a 500MHz Pentium 3 and 750MB RAM. Can I replace the CPU with a faster one without changing anything else? I think 1GHz should be fast enough for Win XP. As it is, Win XP runs ok, but it takes several minutes for it to boot and go through all of the start-up programs. I am knowledgable about hardware, so if possible, give me the details.

Thanks.

I mainly use my desktop pc for browsing the web.

But, the computer's CPU Usage hovers between 50% and 80% while retrieving pages.

Would a new computer with a faster CPU likely make the pages load more quickly?

I really want to put a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core in but I'm not sure it will be supported. I've checked MSI's site and cannot find any info on this mainboard. Any help would be very appreciated. Right now I have a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ installed.

I have purchased a emachines with 850MHZ INTEL CELERON
192MB RAM (upgrading to 256MB)
DSL ETHERNET READY and
CONEXANT 56K MODEM
20GB HARD DRIVE > I added a new dvd/cdrom to it.
I got this for my parents for Christmas to check email and do simple things on the internet. They know very little about computers..
Will it be fast enough? I can't upgrade the RAM any higher than 256 MB. It is running windows XP that I just installed.
