could be 2 different issues
1. BIOS related, The 4,096 Cylinder (1.97 GiB / 2.11 GB) Barrier
2. The FAT16 Partition Size (2.00 GiB / 2.15 GB) Barrier
The 2 GiB capacity barrier is a limitation on the size of disk volumes in the FAT 16 file system. Due to the way that disks are set up using clusters, it is not possible to have more than 2 GiB in a single partition when using either the DOS, Windows 3.x or the early Windows 95 version.

Do you have any other partitions on that disk? I will assume that, that is after formatting but you should not lose that much space after formatting. Are there any files on the disk or is it empty? Is your motherboard new enough to be able to recognize the whole thing? Are you running Windows 95? Is the trash empty? How big is the swap file? Are you running XP? If you are running XP Windows takes a certain amount for system restore and for the trash can. Also Internet Explorer takes a certain amount for temporary Internet files.

Run Scandisk. This will locate any lost files that may be occupying the webspace.
If this does not solve the problem, you will need to format your hard drive and create new partitions. Also make sure that your system is not old enogh to detect the hard drive.

Sounds like you have some unpartitioned space on your hard drive. I hope you are running an older OS....if so....boot to MS-DOS...and type in fdisk press enter. It will show partition information...and allow you to create a new partition on your drive...you should be able to accomplish this without losing the logical partion

Either it's partitioned into separate drives, like C: & D: or it's just partitioned for 2gb.

Would you have a C drive and a D drive... Since you can split your hard drive into multiple drives...
I tend to like doing this since you can seperate your OS from your data files....
