I mainly use my desktop pc for browsing the web.

But, the computer's CPU Usage hovers between 50% and 80% while retrieving pages.

Would a new computer with a faster CPU likely make the pages load more quickly?

My emachines PC is about 3 years old. It has over 700 MB of RAM. I believe that the processor is a Celeron 2.0GHz. The internet connection is 3.0mbps DSL.

You don't really need a new computer. First, check what programs are taking a good part of your RAM, and finish them if you don't need them. Second, I hope you are not on dial-up. If you are, consider switching to a faster connection(DSL or Cable). Third, delete your browser history and Internet Temporary Files, all .tmp files and check for spyware/adware.

Do a defrag, scan for viruses, spyware, adware. That should help you some. Delete all the internet temporary files, in IE7 tools>delete browsing history, in IE6 internet options>delete temporary files button, in Firefox tools>clear private data, check mark the cookies option also.

If you use Windows, there's a good chance your PC is a zombie and it's using much of its processing power to send out junk mail.

Help rid the world of spam. Get a Mac.
