Well the thing is i need to replace my drive and most the drives require EIDE slot. So im wondering whats the difference in EIDE and IDE? I mean are they pretty much the same? Because i just wanna make sure a dell dimension 4600 supports this EIDE so i can buy a dvd/cd drive i want, that requires this EIDE slot or whatever.

I built my own computer in 2002 and it's now starting to give out. Mainly the motherboard. I have a Soltek Socket A type mobo that just died and I would like to know what kind of a motherboard I should buy that will still be able to use my old hardware. Mainly, I want to be able to still use:

- my old CPU, an AMD 1800+/266 ATHLON 1.53ghz.
- my system memory, which is three sticks of Crucial Technology 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Desktop Memory

Do I need to get a Socket A mobo or can I get any other AMD-supported motherboard?

Also, does it pay off more just to get a new mobo and a new CPU. I really don't need to use the computer for too much.

I used to be a Mac person...was raised with Apples since kindergarten, and I'm talking old sh*t - (though I have nothing but respect and admiration for those who were into computers before me! Yay for old hackers! :-) Seriously.)

In school, we used Apple II's, IIe, IIc, IIgs. Later the cursed 52xx all in one series, and the LC/Performa 5xx series, etc. And later, iMacs.

Our family had several kinds of Macs as well, including a Quadra 950 and IIfx.

But, I digress.

I switched to PC in 9th grade, personal choice, and have never looked back. I realized that I needed to actually DO stuff with a computer...and I enjoy building my own and tinkering, something you never could do that well with Macintosh's.

As for Apple's current incarnation of it's OS...well, I barely recognize it...the last one I used with any regularity was 8.6...so a while ago.

So, what are you? Mac or PC?
Why? Why not?
I'd love any answers, verbose or spartan, because frankly, I'm bored :-)

I reinstalled Windows XP MCE 2005 SP2. During re-installation the i386 registry files were not found. I prompted to find them the my re-installation CD or my PC didn't have them. I continued the reinstallation now IM encountering errors with my PC.

My media center Video, live TV option won't work. I get some weird JIT debugging error.

If this helps I have a dell deminsion 5100 and I used the red Windows XP MCE 2005 SP2 CD that came with the PC.

I can get online, open file, but i can't access my firewall either.

i thought about buying Windows XP MCE 2005 SP2 from a regular retailer but if I do i want to make sure that'll fix the problem

Why is this? What problems will people buying a new computer (first computer) have to deal with using Vista? Is it just bugs from being new that willl be corrected?

I don't really want a Mac, but I found a Mac that's just an outstanding deal. I want to know if I can install Windows or Linux on a Mac now that they're using Intel chips, or is there something else about them that prevents this?

Also, this is the Mac I'm looking at, tell me if this seems like a good deal to you:

Price: $1,499
2 Intel Xeon Dual-Core Processors 5140,
2.66GHz, 1GB RAM,
250GB Hard Drive,
16X DVD+/-RW,
Mac OS X v10.4

It is old! It doesn't have a stand up tower, it has a cpu. It had windows 98 and a friend gave me xp to load on to my computer. The problem is, the xp used up all of my memory. Can I add more to a Gateway cpu? Or can I delete some of the things off xp to clear up some memory? Now I can't get online with verizon dsl, because I can't load the software b/c I have no memory. I am completely stupid when it comes to computers.....please please help!

Im taking the cisco class and have some questions about FAT32 and NTFS.
Here they are.
1. What is the default cluster size setting when formatting a Windows NTFS partition on a
hard disk drive larger than 2 GB?

2. What is the command used to change a FAT32 partition to an NTFS partition?

3. What is the Master File Table (MFT) and what does it contain?

4. What is NTFS journaling?

5. How does journaling help an operating system recover from system failures?

6. Why is an NTFS partition more secure than FAT32?

Just answer the Q's with the numbers like this.
EX: 1. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
2. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
