I'm excluding software in this case, friend of mine wants to use it to surf the internet and download music/movies and just wants a basic-rock solid computer with parts that aren't going to break down and a tower, fan, and power supply that are going to work, plus leaving room for upgrades later.

WD or Seagate or other for hard drive and what would be a good CPU to keep my eyes out for, older model Intel P4..

Plenty of stores in the area, I just don't have the time to shop around.

I am not good at computers what so ever. I talked this person down to $500 (includes cpu desk). I figure it will need to be upgraded but not sure what, hopefully I can do it myself.
The bottom line is I play WoW and BF2 on top of having about 1000 songs and short movies. So here are the specs..

Acer AL2223W 22 inch WIDESCREEN lcd monitor
Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard
dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 runs at 3.0 GHz PER core
Maxtor 160GB SATA hard drive, 2 x 512 PC6400 memory (1GB total)running in dual channel
PHILIPS 20X DVD±R DL DVD Burner
Logitech cordless keyboard and cordless optical mouse
2.1 Cyber Accoustic speakers with subwoofer
ATI X300 PCI Express x16 video card w/TV, DVI & VGA
The case is powered by a 450 watt power supply. The case has 2 front USB 2.0 ports, audio in/out ports and a firewire IEEE 1394 port

The seller said he spent over $1250

Thanks in advance for the input!

My pc will not boot past the opening BIOS screen. It identifies the bus speed then hangs (Just before the memory test) and shows a message "State 50" If I reboot it seems to work past the state (stops on 52, next reboot stops on 74 then finally gets to the O/S) It did this once to where I was able to complete a full system back-up before it turned itself off.

This is not a heat problem, as it happens on initial boot. If I do get past the 50 state, and into the O/S it will run 5 to 10 minutes then turns off as if unplugged.

I am assuming this is a mother board problem, but not sure.

NOTE: this is a AMD 64x2 mother board with 2GB memory.

Here are my options:

1. Intel® Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB)

2. Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6850 (4MB L2 Cache,3.0GHz,1333 FSB)

#1 has 4 processors compared to 2 and a bigger cache

however, #2 runs at 3GHz compared to 2.4GHz, and has a higher FSB

I am looking at getting a good computer that will last 5-7 years, and be able to run any software that come sout in that time

Nothing fancy, but i want to be able to play some games, do basic pictures, and have a few thousand songs on the hard drive.

what i'm wondering about is whether or not having the faster processor at 3GHz would make that much of a difference for what I want to do

AND whether having the 4 processors compared to 2 would be better anyways

real answers only please

My PC won't boot, all the fans start, the mobo lights up. But there is no signal to the keyboard/mouse or monitor. The PC was working fine for around 3 weeks, then one day it just wouldnt start.

I have replaced the motherboard, the PSU and the CPU. Still the same problem, have tried to boot out on a non-conductive surface, to eliminate any shorting problems... still happens. I am sooo stuck, I have tried booting without a video card and without RAM still nothing, no post or anything. MY spec:

Core2Duo 2160 CPU
abit ip-35e Mobo
2gb DDR2 800mhz Ram
x1950 pro PCI-E GFX
600w OCZ stealthXtreme.

Find me the answer and I will love you forever :)

hello i'm putting a brand new computer together. the motherboard is an asus crosshair, processor amd black edition 6400 3.2, video card is an 8800 nvidia geforce 640 mb. one 150 gb hardrive raptor and a segate 300 gb, a regular dvd burner and 2 gb of ram ddr2 ocz platinum, and a 700 watts rocketfish power supply. here is my problem i have everything ready plug in but when i try to turn on the computer nothing turns on, i mean everything is turn off i don't hear the hardrives runing neither the fans. so what i did was i unplug the 8800 video card, and try to turn the pc on again guess what everything turn on, so i'm thinking i need another power supply, which is weird because i don't think 700 watts is not enogh for what i'm running, so i plug the video card back and nothing wouldnt turn on so i'm really pissed off right now. if there is anybody there that has some sort of advice please let me know asap thanks

See i am trying to upgrade my desktop, its a compaq. I used CPUZ, it told me i have 2 slots of 512 MB RAM, they are both Pc2-5300 333Mhz, then i went online to check newegg.com, i can only find Pc2-5300 667 Mhz, I couldnt find any 333Mhz ones.
Will i be able to use the 667 one? I am trying to take one 512 mb out, and put a 1G one in so i have 1.5 G.
Thanks a lot for help.

In additon to using it for standard tasks such as web surfing, MS Office tools, etc, I'm getting into video editing, music, photos and all things creative. It seems anything creative is better done on a MAC. MAC just seems more cutting edge. Would love to hear some opinions.
