Core 2 extreme is the best but is costly. I recommend the core 2 duo for a better price

I am a little taken back why in the world you mentioned Xeon especially without model number, it is a Server-Class CPU branch line back from Pentium Pro until now and beyond, it would be the best if you choose. All except playing games can easily be done by a lowly P3.

My order is Xeon, Core 2 Extreme, Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo.

Ordered from fastest to slowest: Core 2 Extreme, Core 2 Quad, Xenon*, Core 2 Duo.

However, if you are going on a budget mid-level rig, go with Core 2 Duo. It has the best price-performance ratio.

*: Preforms better on server motherboards, that list is only for home PC motherboards

For major multi-tasking Core 2 Quad would be the best. Even though it's processing speed is slower than the others, it can multi-task even more without slowing down. I have the Quad and I pretty much do the same things as you and it doesn't slow me down, everything runs fast.

Your question can no longer rather be replied as asked. this is like asking "what's the variation between a Toyota and a Ford". the two "middle 2 Duo" and "Centrino" are product strains that contain a sort of diverse products. The middle 2 Duo line contains a sort of the two laptop and computing device processors. they're all twin-middle and that all of them use the comparable common microarchitecture. The "Centrino" call is approved via Intel for use on particular mixtures of processors and different hardware. Technically, a processor on my own can't be a Centrino, inspite of the shown fact that this is eligible to apply the "Centrino" call if mixed with the right chipset, WiFi controller, and different aspects needed to be branded a "Centrino" platform. The intel quads are currently the fastest (kentsfield core).
Take a look for yourself:

The best bang for buck is probably the AMD X2 6000:

Xeon series=Server/workstation processors.

all "extreme" labeled CPUs are too expensive for you. (1000$+) Intel doesn't cut extreme processor prices.

C2Q is the best one for you inside your price range and has noticable improvements over C2D.

The best one, the QX9650, is out of your price range. I'd get the Q6600, if I were you. It sounds like you're a good candidate for a quad.
