I'm excluding software in this case, friend of mine wants to use it to surf the internet and download music/movies and just wants a basic-rock solid computer with parts that aren't going to break down and a tower, fan, and power supply that are going to work, plus leaving room for upgrades later.

WD or Seagate or other for hard drive and what would be a good CPU to keep my eyes out for, older model Intel P4..

Plenty of stores in the area, I just don't have the time to shop around.

Excluding software, monitor, burner (what version of Xcopy is best for backups?) and floppy.

Situation - mom's computer, has high speed internet and uses video streaming. May transfer to bigger hard drive, but every year the brands change as far as favorites go.

More concerned about brand of motherboard, CPU and RAM, what the best matchup is going to be, the NIC card, sound and video card, and having something that's going to run great and add to later on. I'll even factor out the cost of the hard drive except wondering to choose between Western Digital, Seagate, or Maxtor.

Concerns: good fan, good power supply, good motherboard, RAM, and a good chip (any problems with AMD over Intel?) for the best value that might have been out for a while that I can find for a decent price, and change out in a year for something faster.

Try Walmart saves hassle plus you've got the warranty.
Everex TC2502 Green gPC The gPC comes pre-loaded with the gOS operating system -- a Linux variant -- and a 1.5 GHz processor manufactured by Intel clone maker Via Technologies. The rest of the specs include an 80 Gbyte hard drive and 512 Mbyte of DDR 2 memory.

There's no monitor included, but buyers get stereo speakers and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive.

As for software, the gPC comes with the free OpenOffice.org 2.2 productivity suite. The suite, which includes word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications, recently won backing from IBM.

Everex is a Taiwanese-based PC maker that's looking to carve a niche for itself as a supplier of low-cost systems. A version of Everex's gPC that runs the basic edition of Microsoft's Windows Vista is on sale at Wal-Mart for $298.

Thats going to be pretty cheap computer.
I guess no gaming? Is Gaming even an option?
You would have to get a cheap (2 year old) motherboard.
You might be better of looking on ebay or maybe dell has some old model for that price.
Trying to build it would be tuff. Even a cheap case is 20, motherboard 50, processor 45, powersupply 30, Ram 20,
CD or DVD drive is like 25. it would be tight, so old that he would have to spend another 200 just to upgrade it.

I went to mwave.com and put an uber-cheapo together for just over $163. Add a hard drive for $42 The keyboard, mouse and monitor will kill ya. You might want to go used and get a $25 monitor off craigslist and some super-cheap mouse/keyboard combo.

Try craigslist or ebay for even better deals and I'd bet you could keep it ALL under your $200 budget - but just barely.
