I've got an imac/desktop that i use every day. Is it better for my computer to shut it down overnight or just log off when i'm done?

For the computer itself, it's ideal to power it down once every couple of days. It's not necessary to shut it down every day and in fact doing so takes quite a toll on the hardware.
But then again, from the standpoint of how much your electricity bill will be.. it'd be better to shut it down at night when you're not using it.
So it's a trade-off. If you're not too concerned about the electricity bill, I'd say power it down once every 2 or 3 days.

I would shut it down, a bit advice to javier et all: saving electricity is right, and so is extending life of PSU if that off turns out to be long, but every part of PCs are intended to last, by the time it is faulty whatever it is must have out lived its service expectation and already is just an antique on the secondary market even if that item is in top shape. Updating security software is quite useless in my view, if you practice Safe Netting (analogous to Safe Sex) a lot of headache can be avoided.

In terms of wear and tear on the components, you're better off shutting it down overnight when it's not in use. You'll also save a bit on electricity.

I shut down my computer at the end of my day.
Besides savings on electricity. I believe I am
extending the useful life of my computer.
Also, when I open my computer in the morning,
I update my internet security ( anti-virus ,... )
files.

It isn't really necessary to turn it off at all, as long as its not running a bunch of programs. If you insist on one or the other, i would say shut it down. it will keep everything cool and stuff. Again, you don't have to do anything like that unless you want to.

If you're not using it you might as well just shut it off and save yourself the energy bill.
The longer you let a computer run the more likely problems will be as well (Such as power supply deaths)

I leave mine on. If you're using it daily, that's probably the best thing to do. I'm not 100% certain, though...
