The computer that I'm working on won't boot past BIOS. The screen goes blank after BIOS. I can get into BIOS where it appears to be reading everything. I'm leaning towards the hard disk drive but wanted some feedback before really getting into it.

Hi, I have a Dell Pentium 4 XP. It is almost 4 years old. Recently, the fan has been running at full blast whenever I have the computer on (it literally sounds like a vacuum). I've learned to deal with that, though. Just saying it might be a part of the problem.

The real problem occurs when I start the computer up. A couple of days ago, I thought the computer was shot. I pressed the power button and the monitor started displaying lots of colors, stripes, colors changing, flashing, etc. Finally after turning it on and off several times, I actually get the computer start up, and I am using it right now to type this.

I figure the fan is working fine, it's like overworking to keep the CPU from overheating. Am I frying my CPU alive? What's wrong? It's so loud I can barely hear myself talk. I use my computer for email, youtube, forums, dvd's, pictures, and music syncing. No gaming. Help please. =(

I will admit that I am not very good with computers.
Here is my problem:

I forgot to turn my computer off one night. I came down the next day and it had a black screen telling me that it did not shut down properly. There are four options to select.
1. start in safe mode
2. start using last known good configurations
3.start windows normally
4. start in safe mode using....uh, something that brings up a bunch of weird stuff I have never seen.

I have tried to start it with all options and they all just try to work then blink off and the computer goes back to the black screen again.

Does anyone have any idea what happened and how it can be fixed? Thank you!

Also, what does it mean when RAM is buffered? Is that a good thing?

After I shutdown my computer, there still remains power in the mouse and other USB connected device (having no external power source) i.e the light on the devices remain on.

What might the problem be and how do i resolve it.

Thank you.

I know you should delete temporary internet files, defrag and run a scan disc every now and then but im not sure how often and if there is anything else i should be doing. I run XP and have probably 4 or 5 hours a day of internet use.

But there is no sound while in safe boot mode. I have completely wiped the drive clean and reinstalled every thing. The system test tell me there is nothing wrong. Don't know what other info is needed.
And I know nothing about computers. I had someone tell me to run it in the safe boot mode until I could find out what is wrong to fix it. Thanks for the help.
Any one can e-mail me for info or to tell me what is wrong. My e-mail is stalkerspidy@yahoo.com
