Hey mate i'd like to be able to help you with you Pc issues..
It's certainly not un-common for your Pc to start giving below
average performance- I too've had great
problems with my computer in the past..!
You'll be pleased to know.. there are more options
available to you than those which others have previously suggested.
First thing you will want to do -if you haven't already, is to download, install, and then run the free and safe software download at http://www.ccleaner.com Once you've got the program open, select all the options under the tabs “Windows”, and “Applications”... EXCEPT don't tick the “Old Prefetch Data” tickbox in each tab! Continue by disabling unneeded programs slowing down windows booting times.
The main reason computers take soo long to load is because of the amount of
junk that window has to load when its starting. Eliminate as much as
possible and experience faster boots. Start on this by following the below procedure:
1. Go to "Start"
2. "Run"
3. Type in: MSCONFIG, it will bring up "System Configuration Utility",
4. Click on the "Services" tab,
5. Here your going to select "Hide All Microsoft Services".
6. Select any programs you find unnecessary and anything with a name you
don't recognize simply Uncheck.
7. Then select the "Startup" tab and do the same.
8. When finished click "Apply" and restart your computer.
Another thing you can do is download Bootvis: a tool that runs Microsofts optimization on command
instead of the scheduled times. You will notice immediate
improvements.
In the menu...
1. Click on "Trace",
2. "Next Boot and Driver Delays"
3. "Trace Repetitions" screen will appear
4. Click "Ok" and Restart your computer.
5. Then when your computer finishes loading, BootVis will automatically start to analyze.
6. When its done, go to "Trace"
7. "Optimize System" and Reboot.
You can continue to easily enhance the opperation of your Pc by disabling the indexing service, eliminating all unnecessary windows graphics, and tweaking your folder settings, just to name a few.
You can start on disabling unnecessary indexing by:
1st- Clicking Start
2nd- Clicking “My Computer”
3rd- Look under “Hard Disk Drives” and right click on your Hard Disk
4th- Click “Properties”
5th- Uncheck “Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching”
6th- Click “Apply”
7th- Select “Apply changes to C:\ Subfolder and files” and hit OK
8th- If anything pops on the screen now, hit ignore.
These are just a few of the tweaks you can perform by yourself to enhance your or a friend's Pc.
If you want to keep speeding up your computer without buying computer upgrades you can go to an incredible site called http://www.pcsecretformulas.com which is where I got these great answers for my own Pc improvement.
Again, I hope this helps you out!
Good Luck!

Could be lots of things. The hard drive might be failing. Try chkdsk (start -> run, enter "cmd" and type

chkdsk c: /f

in the dos box). It'll offer to run when you restart. Restart and let it run. If there are errors, do it again when xp starts. If there are still errors, your drive is probably failing. Backup, get a new one ASAP!

Sounds like you are trying to load too much. Why don't you try:
---remove wallpaper
---remove screensaver
---check your start menu and remove anything you don't use daily
Start
Settings
Taskbar and Start Menu
Start Menu
carefully see what can be removed - be very careful here and don't touch anything you're not sure of - you don't want to mess up Windows.
---now, run a Disk Cleanup
---run a defrag

It's got to be better!

It means you need new RAM, or do a Disk Defragment by going into Start>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragment, this will compress files and free up access times.
As for RAM I would go to http://crucial.com and get some new RAM.
