I know you should delete temporary internet files, defrag and run a scan disc every now and then but im not sure how often and if there is anything else i should be doing. I run XP and have probably 4 or 5 hours a day of internet use.

it all depends of the usage of the computer.

Since I use it alot, I clean my temp files and everything, everyday.

Defragment, once a month or so.

I use my computer for up to 16 hours a day

Disk defrag has an option to "Analyze" before doing an actual defragmentation. When the analyzer finishes, it will tell you if you should defragment the volume or not. Just check this periodically; maybe every couple of weeks depending on how much you are adding and removing files from the drive.

I wouldn't worry about running scan disk too often unless you are running into some kind of recurring issues.

The big thing is making sure to run virus scans since you spend a good bit of time on the internet. Have it run daily at some strange hour when you will not be at the computer. It's also good to have a dedicated anti-spyware client since they often catch what your anti-virus client will miss. I personally use Spybot.

Hi!

1. Defragmentation: In windows Operating system, if you frequently install and un-install or delete files then you should use the defragmenter more frequently.. But if you rarely do that, then running the defragmenter once every 2 or 3 months will do..

2. Temporary Internet files: Well deleting them does not take a long time.. so I delete them every morning for safety reasons..

3. Anti-Virus: run a full scan when you install the anti-virus software then keep the anti-virus monitor tool running all the time and update the virus definition database as new updates arrive...

4. Scan disk... The frequency of using it is usually just like the defragmenter..

5. Windows is so buggy! Why don't you immigrate to Linux! Its cheep and cool!

You should empty the temporary internet files weekly to keep them from piling up. The defrag utitlity has an analyze button that tells you if you need to defrag or not. Just check it every couple of weeks until it tells you to defrag. Scan disc is pointless unless you are having problems with your disc or files.
