Hi, I have a Dell Pentium 4 XP. It is almost 4 years old. Recently, the fan has been running at full blast whenever I have the computer on (it literally sounds like a vacuum). I've learned to deal with that, though. Just saying it might be a part of the problem.

The real problem occurs when I start the computer up. A couple of days ago, I thought the computer was shot. I pressed the power button and the monitor started displaying lots of colors, stripes, colors changing, flashing, etc. Finally after turning it on and off several times, I actually get the computer start up, and I am using it right now to type this.

I figure the fan is working fine, it's like overworking to keep the CPU from overheating. Am I frying my CPU alive? What's wrong? It's so loud I can barely hear myself talk. I use my computer for email, youtube, forums, dvd's, pictures, and music syncing. No gaming. Help please. =(

I've cleaned my computer already. It is 101% dust free, so it couldn't possibly be the problem. I've got a new fan on the way anyhow. I doubt it is the problem. Maybe my CPU is on the verge of frying.

A new computer was in the planning before this one started acting up. I would prefer not to finish this one off quite yet. Thanks guys.

Hi. The simplest check is to open the case and clean the heatsink and fans. Sounds like an overheating problem. If you case fans have a filter, remove them and wash them. A clogged filter will cause a partial vacuum in which the fan will spin faster but not move enough air. Good luck!

Maybe the fans and other systems are clogged with dust.. try buying one of those computer dust cleaners and spraying the fans... thats a sign it is not cooling the stuff correclty
