I will admit that I am not very good with computers.
Here is my problem:

I forgot to turn my computer off one night. I came down the next day and it had a black screen telling me that it did not shut down properly. There are four options to select.
1. start in safe mode
2. start using last known good configurations
3.start windows normally
4. start in safe mode using....uh, something that brings up a bunch of weird stuff I have never seen.

I have tried to start it with all options and they all just try to work then blink off and the computer goes back to the black screen again.

Does anyone have any idea what happened and how it can be fixed? Thank you!

It would be hard to guess what might have happened to shut your system down, but here is something that you may want to try. Windows has a recovery console that can repair most operating system problems. To use it you will need an XP installation CD.

First you must be sure that the CD drive is set to boot before the hard drive. To do this, enter the BIOS by tapping either the Del key or the F2 key while the system is booting, (starting up). After you have done the above, you can try the following.

USING THE WINDOWS REPAIR CONSOLE

Put your XP disk into your CD drive and restart your system. This will start the XP installation process. When you come to the screen that asks if you want to install XP or if you would like to “Repair” XP, choose Repair. This will open the repair console command prompt. At the prompt, type: chkdsk /r. (There is a space between the k and the /. Now hit “Enter”. The repair should now start. Allow it to run until it stops. This can take some time, so be patient.

If all goes well, XP will replace any and all missing operating system files.

This is non-destructive and will not change any of your personal files.

Ut oh!! Try and unplug it and leave it for a few mins then plug it back in and try to start windows in safe mode. If you still can't start windows at all you'll need to reinstall it with the windows disk and unfortunately you will lose all your data on the computer.
