I need a computer that's secure and not as prone to hackers and viruses, ect., that's fast, THAT WILL LAST LONG, not crash, can handle minor business programs, can use media easily, that will have some good support, and can run the internet with no worries or hiccups. I really am considering an iMac, but I'm worried about the freezing a little bit, and it's rather new. I've used Macs before (that's really why I want to switch, I prefer them) but I need to think of the rest of the house, with some business, and of course, security. Macs are secure, for the most part, and I'm planning on putting virus software on it, just in case. But, I need some advice, and no flames on Mac vs Windows. I really need some help, and no, I'm not getting Ubunto/Linux or whatever.

A friend has just donated to me (hehee) his "old" Hp 5000 desktop. Pentium 4 2ghz....Trouble is on boot up it wants me to connect to microsoft..... if i dont it just keeps looping back to the start....and I can't...because I dont have the same network provider he had (so I cant even install my network isp setup)..

Is there a way around this, by disabling something in BIOS perhaps?

(Note I don't know that much about computers but do enjoy my computer games)

I'm considering buying a 8800GT graphics card but not sure whether my dell dimension e521 can run it. I bought the pc in January this year. These are the specs as far as I know:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processor 5000+
2GB RAM
Motherboard Chipset Geforce6150 AMD hammer
305W standard Dell PSU
Running Windows Vista

It has a PCI-express x16 slot currently being occupied by a Radeon X1300 series card

So would my pc be able to run the 8800GT? Do I need some upgrading to run it or it the motherboard just not compatible at all.

I read somewhere that the stated power ratings for dell PSU's are actually average outputs not max so I think I would just about be fine on the power consumption side

Also my monitor is VGA so does that mean I will also need a DVI to VGA adapter if I can get the card

I'm old school, and scared to change, but love gadgets, and want the best PC available. Are they really that much better? What are some things I should keep in mind?

I'm getting the error message "Cannot playback the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding."

I've tried some trouble shooting on the internet and pretty much everywhere is telling me to check sound in enabled by going control panel/sounds... and playing the windows sounds.

When i do, the small play button used to play the sounds is not highlighted so i don't have the option to... is this because myu sound card is faulty?

I cant do any re-installing because this is my brothers really really really really old computer & it's a Frankenstein so there are hardly any installation discs, well at least not for the speakers or sound card.

Can anyone help me on this?

I like to tinker with old computers, research the issues and fix them and give them away. I have this one, no idea what issues it has because I can't get the monitor to power up with it. You can hear the computer powering, but the monitor light stays amber. Its not the monitor, I hooked it up with another one, and its fine. I read on the net that it could be the keyboard is not compatible with the mobo. Does anyone else have any ideas on this? The computer is pretty old, a Compaq built for 98, which I intend to completely redo with 2000.

HI there

My PC is knackered and Ive been rolling around Ebay for a new one. The following place seems quite reliable but I just wondered if anyone could tell me if the specifications seem ok?? It seems a really good deal.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DUAL-CORE-5600-AM2-64BIT-4GB-PC-19-TFT-320GB-nVidia_W0QQitemZ200165664116QQihZ010QQcategoryZ179QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Id like a machine that can play the latest games and has a nice amount of space for music etc, this seems to be the ticket but I just wanted some opinions for folk who know the nitty gritty. Dont get me wrong I'm not after a complete beast of a machine, but I just wondered if there was anything particularly dodgy about this deal.

Thanks for any help/opinions

Shaun

After I use the "safely remore hardware" icon to remove a memory card, my HP desktop with its 8-in-one card reader always requires a computer restart before it can read another card. Once I properly remove a card, Device Manager shows the USB Mass Storage device disabled with an exclamation point. Reenabling the device has no effect. Only a complete restart brings it back up and running. Is that the way it must work?

"Cleaning up" I meant personal files on a PC. I would not go as far as reformating it because I don't know where my original recovery discs are. I just want to delete all my personal files without re-installing Windows XP. Any help would be great thanks.
