I'll try to explain everything simply. The 2 you are speaking of are from different companies. Athlons are from AMD, they have many other processors but I won't confuse you with all these desktop platforms. Intel also has quite a few.as well.
If you are buying a new computer, anything will due. It all depends on your uses though. If you plan to do some heavy tasks you should at least get a Athlon X2 or Core 2 Duo system. Pentium 4's are not worth investing into a new computer. But for general use (e-mail, internet)...Anything would do. Although I NEVER recommend the low low budget computers that use celeron/sempron and similar processors. For just a few extra dollars you'll see a drastic increase in system responsiveness.
If you are planning to buy a computer and it has a Athlon X2 processor..Don't worry about it, they are good processors. Overall though...They both offer the same thing. They are just from 2 different companies. But do keep in mind you get what you pay for...A very low budget processor is not going to be a pleasant and quick experience.

Intel is an American company which makes the Pentium, Celeron, and other lines of processors. AMD is a British company that makes the Athlon and other lines of processors.
Having run multiple computers with both, there is no noticable difference between them. Kind of like what is the difference between a Chevy and Ford? Not much.
The difference may be important when you compare a specific Chevy to a specific Ford. If the Chevy is a sports car and the Ford an SUV, there will be big differences. But not because one is a Chevy and the other a Ford. Rather because they are different models.
To know the differences between two processors (of any company), compare the specs. What is the processor speed? Does it have L1 memory on board? How much L1 memory? etc. That will give you the answer.

Theres a bunch of fans of either and they will all say that the other is not as good ... thats so wrong. It all depends on what you want.
Amd has an INSANELY high FSB which is how fast the motherboard can work with the processor to send data back and forth. This, simply put, makes for streaming, minimal lag gaming. Its even great for videos or other media.
Intel on the other hand is much more of a power house. The multi-tasking capabilities are far superior to AMD. For example, If you are downloading music from limewire while watching a youtube movie and checking you email ... Intel would be so much better than AMD. Downloads are typically faster with Intel as well.
Bottom Line
AMD = Gaming INTEL = Multi-Task
Gamers most always choose AMD because its only like 75% of the cost of intel and much better for their computer usage.
