I'm getting the error message "Cannot playback the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding."

I've tried some trouble shooting on the internet and pretty much everywhere is telling me to check sound in enabled by going control panel/sounds... and playing the windows sounds.

When i do, the small play button used to play the sounds is not highlighted so i don't have the option to... is this because myu sound card is faulty?

I cant do any re-installing because this is my brothers really really really really old computer & it's a Frankenstein so there are hardly any installation discs, well at least not for the speakers or sound card.

Can anyone help me on this?

Hi, Sounds like you need to reinstall your AV audio drivers.

Find out the make and model number of your motherboard, then go to the relevant manufactures website of that motherboard, select downloads/drivers and select audio.

Once downloaded, install and heypresto after a simple reboot your sound will begin to work again.

Try Powering off the PC,,Open the Case and make sure that the Sound Card is in the slot nice and tight....I have this problem with my PC 4 some reason,,,,my card slips out a little...

Thats all we can really do 4 U right now.....

Just make sure everything is hooked up the way it is supposed to be....

Otherwise write back with more details on what the Sound Card itself IS!!!

If you download Belarc Advisor, and run it, it will give you a comprehensive list of the hardware and software that make up your brother's computer.

Scroll down to where it lists your audio adapter/sound card.

Then all you need to do is type " driver download" in a search engine. i.e., AC97 driver download.

OR

as Frank N states, you could go to driverguide.com, where you have to register, but it's free, and then search for the relevant driver download.

You will have to try reinstalling the sound card drivers, at this point you have no choice.
There are many sites which will no doublt have the drivers, one such site is driverguide.com.
Just because the system is old does not mean there are no driver available for it.
