I like to tinker with old computers, research the issues and fix them and give them away. I have this one, no idea what issues it has because I can't get the monitor to power up with it. You can hear the computer powering, but the monitor light stays amber. Its not the monitor, I hooked it up with another one, and its fine. I read on the net that it could be the keyboard is not compatible with the mobo. Does anyone else have any ideas on this? The computer is pretty old, a Compaq built for 98, which I intend to completely redo with 2000.

Usually that means the computer is not booting far enough to ever send a picture to the monitor. Watch and see if the drives light turn on and off as it should "poll" them during the boot up. If not, then it is not booting.

Check the memory. If it is the wrong kind, or improperly seated, that will keep the PC from booting.

Remove any cards (PCI, EISA, etc) and try booting. If one of them is shorting that can keep the PC from booting (had a bad modem do that once). This includes the video card (watch for the drives to be polled to see if it is booting since you will have no display.)

Try a different video card.

Try a different power supply.

If all of those fail, it is probably an issue with the processor or system board. On the old of a PC, it is not worth replacing. So use the case, cards, memory, and drives to fix other computers.

Good luck....
