...until it becomes so outdated or worn out that I have to buy a new one? It's a HP that was purchased on August of 2002.

OS Version: Windows XP Home Edition SP1
Total Physical Memory: 254 MB (in use for virtualization)
CPU Type: Intel 1800 MHz Pentium 4
Default Printer: Lexmark X1100 Series
Hard Disks: One original 40GB Western Digital with 1.5GB free and one fairly new 160GB Maxtor 3200 with 140GB free.

I also have avast! Antivirus installed, but that's about it. I've had to reinstall Windows once.

My Windows XP computer just seems to take forever to do stuff. I'm fairly computer literate, so I've taken the following steps already.

1. Updated my McAfee anti-virus software and ran it. Came up clean.
2. Updated my Spybot Search & Destroy and ran it. Removed 25 Spyware.
3. Ran MSCONFIG and unchecked a couple of start up items. Most were already unchecked except for stuff like Windows and McAfee updates.
4. Ran the Defragger on my Hard drive. It said I didn't need to, and the analysis showed my drive is about 30% empty and fairly organized.

What other steps are there that I can take to do speed this sucker up? I'm not real demanding on it, using it mostly for Email and internet surfing. It's got a P4 running at 2.5Ghz and adequate RAM.

I formatted and reinstalled, which I occasionally do. On my computer manufacturer's website, it has a BIOS update and an AGP chipset update. How do I know if I actually need to do these or not? I bought my computer in early 2005. The updates are as follows:
(1) AGP Chipset Driver, Ver 1.17E,dated 3/9/2004
(2) AGP Chipset Driver, Ver 1.21, dated 5/24/2006
(3) Bios Update MS 7060 (DOS), dated 2/24/2005

My computer uses an ATI 128 All-In-Wonder. I know it's already "old" by tech standards but I'm wondering if it'll prevent me from running Sims 2? A friend told me it would. What do you think? Is there anything I can do? I can't afford a major upgrade.

I'm a student and will just need a desktop for word processing, browsing the internet, Email, possibly downloading music, and basic photo editing.

I'm not into gaming or anything, and I'm on a budget, so I'd want the best "bang for my buck." Can you please tell me the minimums I would need in terms of memory, RAM, etc. to get a system that will last me for awhile? Also, I'd appreciate feedback on specific brands that I should look for/avoid. Thanks!!

Well, I really can use your help. I accidently downloaded a virus (fake anti-virus program). Now my screen turns blue and an error says "System has found an error and will shut down immediately"... Then it says something about BIOS, Caching, shadowing, and Safemode.... What would you advice?
Thanx :)

Im currently in the process of upgrading my G4 500mhz and im having I hard time diciding which is a better value since they are both around the same price range. Here are my options:

G4 1.5GHz for $259.99 SINGLE or the G4 1.0GHz Dual for $279.99.

I will be using it for 3d rendering and modeling. I also use Photoshop and Illustrator as my main apps. I know the dual helps a lot for multitasking but since the single is faster! AARGHH!! LOL Hard time deciding! =)

I have tried re-setting to a month ago - no difference. I have checked that the hard disk drive is the first option for booting up. I have left the computer on standby overnight to recharge a possibly run-down battery - no difference. What else can I try or ought I to check please?

I'm trying to use SpeedFan but I don't know what to configure because I don't know the model and type of motherboard I have.
I have an Intel Pentium 4 CPU with HT enabled and 3.20 GHz clock speed. Bus speed is 200 MHz and rated FSB 800 MHz.
I used CPU-Z and it told me I had an Intel D915GRO motherboard but I can't find Intel in speedfan.
