You can get great deals at dell, for the music you need a good midi interface. Make sure what you get has at least one open 5 1/4 bay available and add Creative audigy, great interface, then goto a music store that sells instruments an dlook for a good music software.Thes are the only ones that really are any good.
You will spend about $400 on computer, $200 on Midi interface, and around $150-600 for a good music recording making program. Good news is you can buy it a piece at a time...
Your Pc needs large capacity Hard drive, around 200+ gigs, Highest memory you can afford, the bigger the better.

You can get a Dell for about $360+. You might need to get an add-on audio card for better recording. These should cost you less than $30 dollars.
But what you should do is check with the company that makes your audio software to see what they need before making a pc selection. Even call them up! Could save you buying a 2nd computer right away!

I would suggest you start here....
http://www.dell.com/
These are the most reliable budget based Pc's in the world. I have purchased three over twelve years and I still have my original one working in top shape. I donn't care what anyone says these Pc's are great. Check out the site for yourself if you don't like it at least you have some knowledge of what to look for when you are looking for your Pc. I think you'll buy Dell though. I did and I ain't complaining. No I don't work for them either, I'm just one very satisfied customer. If you have any questions let me know I'll help out however I can.
Hope it helps.

Apples may be more expensive, but they are better in general, and also come preloaded with the software you need, if you get a PC, you are going to need to buy the software, which really jacks up the price.

get a solid pc that you can build on try fry's teh have some nice budget pc's get an AMD based system more for your money i wolndnt get used unless you liek being under the hood of your pc . you might want to spend your dough on a good tower and get a used monitor get a big chunky crt they are dirt cheap now. everyone wants the flat ones now.
if you do get a package i hat e to say it cus i used to recoment them but dont get emachines. i loved mine but unless you like fixing pcs they are kinda flaky could be better now i think gateway bought them.. i dont know tho i hate dell too . i say build it yourself its fun but then again if your on a budget you dotn want to be learning how not to burn your mobo at 50 bucks a pop.
