What is the best method to erase a computer without leaving any evidence?

Download a program called Eraser from http://www.pcworld.com and use it.It overwrites everything 35 times and it cant be recovered.It is approved by US Gov to erase sentive information from their HDDs.Also its free.

you mean hard drive. powerful magnets (some x-ray machines will erase it too) will do the trick. But anything deleted (even reformatted as well) can be recovered if they are willing enough to try. There are some software dealers out there that sells programs to guarantee erase everything but like I said anythign erased can be recovered.

i'm guessing that you are getting rid of the computer, take the drive out and take a hammer to it. That is the complete an only way to get rid of all the info.

Reformat the hard disk multiple times, then take it out and take a large magnet to it, set it on fire, drive your car over it mutliple times, then bury what's left of it. That ought to do the trick.

If you really want to wipe it but good, run a degausser over the hard drive. No way to tell it wasn't a current surge.
