If you have one RAM chip with the right amount of pins then the speed shouldn't matter. If you have multiple RAM chips that have the same amount of pins but run at different speeds this will likely cause any range of problems. The problems could range from slowdowns to complete system crashes caused by the computer rejecting both chips.

YES of course, but it will work as as ddr400 (possibly at lower latency). The ddr500 is a high performance RAM popular among gamers and overclockers. It is the type that will work up stable to ddr500 level when you overclock the processor. If you do not overclock, the only performance benefit you get is from the low latency and tighter timings, especially if your motherboard has the tweaking options in BIOS.

Regular ddr400 could be unstable above 425Mhz, that is why overclockers downclock their ddr400 w/ memory dividers so as not to overspeed them during overclocking.

It will work if all of the other parameters match, ie ecc, non-ecc, buffered or unbuffered, but it will only run at the speed of your buss. If your trying to get more performance by going to 500 it won't, it will run at 400.
