My Gateway http://www.shoplocal.com/default.aspx?action=ecomitemdetail&PID=23798381&inventoryid=&N=0&pretailerid=&specs=y&listingtitle= has been overheating for like a year now. Lack of money has me looking for inexpensive upgrades. Normally the comp would freeze and lock up in 10 minutes. Burning a CD or playing a video game, about 5 minutes. I had a few tech's look at it and they replaced the cpu fan. They stated, if continues to lock up, it must be a chip problem. Gateway has lacked the tech support I needed and pretty much refused the computer, due to computer techs replacing the CPU fan. So therefore I opened the tower and ran a 12inch fan blowing into the tower on high. It will let the computer run all day. Unless, I run video games or burn a cd. Which normally locks it up in 10 minutes. I watched the CPU usage reach to around 100% for 2 minutes to achieve this. What can be inexpensively done to stop the over heating? Upgrade CPU fan, power supply, tower. State product names. Thx

My Computer has a built-in Memory Card Reader. (It came with it and i did not by a after-market product.) Yesterday it worked, but now i cant see the Memory Card Stuff anymore. I already did system restore to a few days back when it worked.Or atleast when i saw that it was there.

My new ASUS motherboard is a real gem, but it's loaded with two of those rubbish PCI-1X ports. From what I can tell, they're good for just about nothing more than taking up space on the motherboard that would otherwise be useful. Is there any way to convert them to fit standard PCI cards, or am I simply stuck with them?

I would like to purchase a new motherboard(Micro ATX) and processor for my desktop. I haven't been keeping up with the technologies and reviews for this.

So, I have several questions. You can either answer them, or direct me to a website that provides this kind of information.

What is the best processor in the $100-$125 range? Is it the Intel Duo, Athlon54 Dual Core, or something else? And what is a good micro-atx motherboard to go with it?

I am currently looking at two different processors. One is a X2 5200+ with 2x1mb L2 cache and the other is a X2 5400 with a 2x512 L2 cache. Should I sacrafice L2 for processing speed or go with the slower 5200? Can't aford the 5600 w/ 2x1mb L2. And a 2.8 ghz duel core pentium with a 2x1mb L2 has only 800 mhz fsb. AMD is 1000 fsb.

I currently have an old computer with a 400mhz Mendocino Celeron. Is it possible to upgrade it to a Coppermine Celeron or a Tualatin Celeron?

The computer i have now is old and intergrated everything. So i am looking to buy a decent gaming desktop for under 1,000 that i can upgrade later on in a year or two. i used to look at maximum pc every month, but haven't for the last year or so. so i'm not sure if i should get a intel or amd cpu, a ati or nvidea graphics card. or which one's would be best. last time i checked, ati 9800 was the best. ya, been a while. the bulk of what i will be using it for is mmorpg's, mostly ffxi or try out WoW. but i would also like to play guild wars, FEAR or doom. what will offer the best frame rates and most options for upgrading in the future. when these $500 video cards are $200 or something.
