There is no limit as long as your computer has another free SATA port. Hard drives come as large as 1,000GB these days.

There is absolutely no limit. While you may only be able to add 1-2 more internal hard drives (depending on you case configuration... I can add 5 more to mine) of any capacity, you can add virtually endless external hard drives of any capacity. So it really comes down to how much space you think you need and how much your planning on spending. Internals are reiable and inexpensive. Externals are less reliable but great for making back-ups and transferring files, but they can also be more expensive. Here are some good sites to check out: www.newegg.com, www.tigerdirect.com, www.mwave.com.
Also about that answer saying that adding Hard drive space slows down performance, this is absolutely untrue. You dont have to upgrade anything else when adding a new hard drive. Actually if you buy identical hard drives(i think they have to be internal) you can set up things called RAID. There are several different RAID levels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundant_array_of_independent_disks#Standard_RAID_levels ) . Level 0,2,3,4,5,6 all actually enhance performance by splitting the data onto multiple drives so that when you access that data later, it will be pulling the information from both at the same time instead of trying to get it from just one which will atleast double you access speed.
Also with more hard drive space you can set your virtual memory higher. If you didnt know, Virtual memory is hard drive space that your computer uses when it needs more RAM. This too will increase performance.
hope this helps!

You can add as much space as you want. Most systems will let you add only two harddrives. So if you have 180GB each, you can have a total of 360GB. However, I suggest that you put only a single disk on your system. The other can be an external harddisk (USB connection)... this makes things more portable. For example, I have a 100GB drive that I can connect to my desktop and laptop... works well like this.
And when the external drive is full, you can get a new one without fiddling around your machine.

I thought the largest commercial drive capacity is 500 GB, I maybe wrong and it is indeed 1 TB today.
Very large for a practical limit, although per-drive size is obviously limited; but you have probably 1 SATA port, 3 IDE ports, an expandable length of USB-IDE on your system, not to mention if you want to add SCSI and/or IEEE1934/FireWire.

all the system having unique configuration.
if you add more hardisk your system performance will go slow.if you increase HDD you have to increase the RAM capacity also.so that performance won't affect..
now a days we are getting DVD disk with 4 GB..why don't you try to store it DVD and use it when required?
