I would like to purchase a new motherboard(Micro ATX) and processor for my desktop. I haven't been keeping up with the technologies and reviews for this.

So, I have several questions. You can either answer them, or direct me to a website that provides this kind of information.

What is the best processor in the $100-$125 range? Is it the Intel Duo, Athlon54 Dual Core, or something else? And what is a good micro-atx motherboard to go with it?

Amd type cpu for that price range:

and matx motherboard:

Remember, you have to have dd2 memory for the newer cpus and motherboards now.

I just bought a MoBo Chip combo, and so far I'm happy with the results.

I got the AMD Athlon 64 X2 +4600 processor and the BioStar TForce 6100 AM2 Socket

from my order invoice:
MB BIOSTAR TFORCE 6100 AM2 GF6100 - Retail (Qty=1, Price=$74.99)
CPU AMD|A64 X2 4600+ 65W AM2 2.4G R - Retail (Qty=1, Price=$125.99)
DISCOUNT FOR COMBO #29976 (Qty=1, Price=$-10.00)

I read the reviews on NewEgg regarding the MoBo, and they were mostly positive (61% 5 star rating). As for processors, I read up on Wikipedia, and consulted with a buddy of mine who is getting a PhD in computer architecture.

I could have gone Intel Duo Core 2, but the processors alone were $140+ and compatible MoBo's were not that cheap.

The only drawback I had setting up my machine was that the old memory I had for it was pre-DDR, and the Athlon 64 X2 needs DDR2. I had to buy new sticks, at a total of $99.99.

The board doesn't have as many IDE slot as I'd like. And maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I didn't like the lack of a parallel port. Still, setup was easy (even though my living room is still a warzone of parts).

Anyway, I found all this stuff at http://www.techbargains.com

Check out www.newegg.com. They have good deals and you can search by the price you want to pay.
