My new ASUS motherboard is a real gem, but it's loaded with two of those rubbish PCI-1X ports. From what I can tell, they're good for just about nothing more than taking up space on the motherboard that would otherwise be useful. Is there any way to convert them to fit standard PCI cards, or am I simply stuck with them?

There is a way, but it cost way too much at the moment:

EDIT: The website they link to does exist, so the device is legit. However, rackmount stuff is for professional use. The guy didn't say what price, the guy just asked if it's possible. I know it's heck expensive, in fact I wrote so. Just because you can't afford it doesn't mean it ain't legit. It just means it's out of the question / affordability / practicality.

PCI show slots are available x1, x4, x8 and x16 lengths. If the lower back of the slot is open, you could positioned an prolonged video card (x16) right into a shorter slot (x4) with a minor overall performance penalty. maximum shorter slots have a lower back factor which will block the video card from installation, even nevertheless.

No. You might as well rip one out and put in a new PCI slot, I do agree with you though: THEY SUCK!, why have two of these freaking things when they could just as easily put in two other PCI slots. They better be making some GOOD for 'em. Anyway theres no possible way to convert it, unless you're able to rip it out and put a new PCI slot in there........ I can dream can't I?

Not possible, I don't consider the option above valid as the price is ridiculous, I could build a new rig for that money.
