Our computer freezes up so we have to reboot it. When rebooting it, the computer takes forever to load. How do I get rid of some of the start up programs and just put them behind scenes?

I am going to build my own PC and I am an above casual gamer but not hardcore. I do not wish to run Vista yet, but I plan to in the future. Also, the computer has to be able to do basic procedures such as browsing the web and Microsoft Office. Please list a complete configuration of the best components to use for maximum performance. Also, the total cost (not including monitor) must be under $1,100. Thank you for the responses.

I have a windows XP computer that's a hand-me-down. It has a compaq data fax modem, and network adapters. I know how to bring up the device manager, but I don't know what this stuff means. Will I need to buy more equipment to use this computer wirelessly?

The first screen that is supposed to show the BIOS manufacturer or so doesn't come at all. The power light is on, but the CPU light shows no sign of activity. It is only on, just like the power button. I have tried changing the memory, the monitor, no difference. Is the CPU/motherboard faulty. I slaved the HDD to another PC and cleaned any viruses. The PC was packed down for some months while I was not around. Any ideas for solutions?

Hey all - I updated a Dell 4600 from 256 megs to 1 gig via 2 512mb DRAM - specifically KByte 512MB PC3200 DDR DT (3200/2700 PC400/333) 184 PIN DIMM - and I'm getting thermal shutdowns after doing the upgrade.

So, did I:

1. Choose the wrong memory chips?
2. Screw up when I put the chips in?
3. Unrelated/other?

Thanks in advance!

We had a power surge and the computer wouldn't turn back on, we changed the power supply and it still doesn't work. The little thing we think is the hard drive is black at the end, do you think it got fried or can we still salvage what's on it? I checked the outlets so it's not that, what else could it be?

If I use the free version of killdisk and wipe out all data and drivers, what do I do next to help start my computer clean again?
Do I just install Windows XP and will that make all the drivers workable again?
Also, can I install windows vistas instead of XP after formatting?

Hi,

I have a really crappy computer. IT's a pentium 3 with about 500 MHZ. I was wondering if I add ram to my comp, will it significantly go any faster? Rite now I'm runnin on 384 MB RAM. It takes about 2 full secondes to load a regular web page while using Comcast high scpped interent and mozilla firefox. Since this proccessoer is so slow anyway, will it help if I put any more RAM on it, or is the proccessor so slow already that no matter what I do with the computer, it will stay slow as is?

Thanks
