I have an Alienware Bot desktop whose CPU keeps overheating (apparent design flaw in the Bot line). It is an Intel P4, I believe a 775 chipset.

Can anyone recommend a specific CPU fan I can buy to replace what it came with, preferably one that does not sound like a jet engine, as the CPU fan it came with does.

thanks!

So my friend has a computer that got so unbelievably bogged down with spyware and viruses we decided to reinstall windows XP. Its a relatively new (about 1 year old) HP Pavilion pc, everything went fine, installed windows XP, and SP2.

For some reason the usb ports no longer work, they all worked perfectly fine before reinstalling windows. And in the device manager it says that they are all working correctly, However they simply are not. I plug something in, and it does not recognize that anything is plugged in.

How can I fix this?

PS: For some reason, even before I'd have anything plugged in, it would show that I have "Usb mass storage drives F: G: H: I:", which is weird because we didn't have any usb drive plugged in, only a printer.

I have a Dell 2005FPW that I've had for about a year and a half. It is a 20.1" LCD Ultrasharp flatpanel. My main problem with it is that it shuts off at random moments, and completely shuts off (eg. pushing the power button doesnt work, unpluging and repluging, etc) and then after an hour, it turns back on, but has pretty degraded quality. I restart my computer, then it works fine. I know you may be thinking it may be my gfx card, but I have an NVidia 7900GT with the latest drivers and updates, the temp is 55 C and the fan works on it. This monitor is plugged in through DVI, I pluged it into a VGA and it works as well. Honestly, I'm stumped, and I build computers and repair them as a job.

...How about VICE VERSA?

(90nm CPU on a 0.13 micron MOTHERBOARD)?

-------------------------------------------------------

IF IT SAYS...

System board/Form factor

Supports Intel Northwood processors with 533MHz or 800MHz Front Side Bus (FSB), 512KB L2 cache, and built on a 0.13 micron core

Supports Intel Prescott Pentium 4 processors with 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 cache, and built on a 0.13 micron core

Supports Intel Northwood Celeron processors with 400MHz FSB and 128KB L2 cache

478 pin mPGA socket

uATX

--------------------------------------

WILL THIS CPU WORK WITH THAT MOTHERBOARD?

Pentium 4 2.8GHz/800MHz/1MB

KNOWING THAT THE 1MB CACHE PROCESSOR IS BUILT ON 90NM AND NOT 0.13 MICRON

I have a pc with 2 RAM slots, 1 empty and 1 with 256 MB. Would it be better to upgrade with 1 512 MB stick to 768MB, or just add 1 more 256MB stick for a total of 512MB. I've heard that computers are faster if the two RAM sticks are the same size, but don't want to buy 2 new sticks.

I'm not really in the mood to fry my mobo, so what is the straight up answer from someone that actually knows? On one point, some say take out the battery before you clear the BIOS with a jumper because you don't want to send a charge down the pins. On a second point, some say that taking out the battery will not allow ANY charge to even affect the volatile memory in the BIOS.

Anyone know the real answer? This should be a fun answer session... DON'T GUESS!

I recently bought a Dell PC and when I got it, it was dead. No amount of pressing or holding the on button at the front would switch it on.
So I log onto Dell and speak to an adviser via their rather good technical chat facility. I then receive a call from the tech support adviser who I assume was calling from India by her accent.
Anyway to cut a long story short she asked me to open up the PC unit with a screwdriver and talked me through checking inside. I have no PC hardware skills so most of what she advised me to do went over my head. In the end I put it back together and an engineer is coming to look at it tomorrow.
Was this risky?. It seems odd for someone at Dell to ask a novice to open up a PC. I had no idea what I was doing and could have caused all sorts of damage. Also if the power lead was still connected (she asked me to plug it in while the case was open to check if it was working) could I have been electrocuted?

I'm concerned and wondered what others thought.
