I have a pc with 2 RAM slots, 1 empty and 1 with 256 MB. Would it be better to upgrade with 1 512 MB stick to 768MB, or just add 1 more 256MB stick for a total of 512MB. I've heard that computers are faster if the two RAM sticks are the same size, but don't want to buy 2 new sticks.

Either combination will work fine. Just make sure the ram is all the same speed. If the current ram is 100mhz, and you add 133mhz, your pc will only run at 100mhz. It would be a good idea to check with the manufacturer's website and see what the max size and speed of ram your pc can utilize. Crucial.com has a memory listing, but it is rarely accurate in my experience, and after returning multiple sticks of ram, I don't use it anymore. For the most speed, max the ram amount with the fastest your pc can use.

get the 512. It won't cause any harm, and it will be faster with 1 256 and 1 512 than with 2 256. crucial.com has any easy way to find out which RAM is good for your computer.

It's okay to have different sizes, but make sure the biggest is in the first slot. Also a 32Bit operating system, will not support more then 4 GB Ram, so no use in putting 8 GB in .

They do not need to be the same size in MB just make sure you buy the same type of Ram.
If your computer only has 256Mb it is likely to be SD Ram this is an older type of Ram that is not really used anymore.

While you are correct the RAM would be faster with the same sizes in each bank, most people won't tell you though that the difference in speed isn't noticeable to the human eye. I would get what you could afford and what you think you need.

The 256x2 setup will run at very slightly faster speed (unnoticeable really), but 512 is hardly enough these days.

So get 768, you will probably need it.

NOT necessarily. Only motherboards capable of running in dual channel mode would really benefit from the wide memory bandwidth. You need matched pair to run dual channel mode.

It might also be RDRAM, which would require matching of sizes and speeds (I have 45-800).
