So my friend has a computer that got so unbelievably bogged down with spyware and viruses we decided to reinstall windows XP. Its a relatively new (about 1 year old) HP Pavilion pc, everything went fine, installed windows XP, and SP2.

For some reason the usb ports no longer work, they all worked perfectly fine before reinstalling windows. And in the device manager it says that they are all working correctly, However they simply are not. I plug something in, and it does not recognize that anything is plugged in.

How can I fix this?

PS: For some reason, even before I'd have anything plugged in, it would show that I have "Usb mass storage drives F: G: H: I:", which is weird because we didn't have any usb drive plugged in, only a printer.

All I can say is that if you have a memory card reader, that is what the F G H and I drives are. (probably on the printer)

USB ports, did u try disconnection the printer and then trying the other devices. Maybe the printer is overriding the ports.

you will be able to desire to doubtlessly installation the previous not hassle-free in the hot gadget - open up the XPS and look at the present HDD to confirm if there's a spare bay for additonalchronic and spare connector (SATA). next open up the previous and verify the relationship form (IDE or SATA) if the comparable and there is area reove from the previous laptop and look at the top with the relationship and seek for "Jumper," thechronic could desire to have a diagram exhibiting - grasp , Slave and Cable opt for" those are chosen by ability of masking the relevent pins with a small plastic "jumper". If the hot laptop has in hassle-free terms onechronic put in the it incredibly is likely the grasp (look at the cable if it does not have grasp written next to the connector ) then pass the plastic jumper to make the 2dchronic the "slave,". If the above is going properly reassemble and verify BIOS recommendations to confirm thechronic is visable. The not easychronic could be knackered no count if it incredibly is, you are able to in many cases hear a clacking sound on start up. yet there are different motives that could desire to describe the lacking records.

XP1 does not support USB, so even if you installed XP Service pack 2 you still need to go into device manager, your USB drivers, right click and update the drivers, it will do it automatically

you need the mother board drivers installing. windows is using generic drivers, so best to go and download the motherboard driver from HP.

then install the drivers, DO NOT HAVE ANY USB ITEMS PLUGGED IN while you're installing the drivers. after you have installed the drivers. reboot the system then insert the usb cables to what ever

You're probably going to need to reinstall the drivers for your usb ports. Hopefully you have a disc but probably not so you'll need to figure out who manufacturers them and check the website for a download.

HP Media card reader is what's giving you all those extra drives. I would try reinstalling the USB drivers and see what that does for you.
