Test in dxdiag. Click start, click Run, type dxdiag, OK. On new Window, select Sound tab. Check if your device and driver are there. If not, power OFF. If your Soundcard is a discrete card, try reseating it on the PCI slot. If it can not be detected anymore in dxdiag, it could be dead.

Did you use the Dell Diagnostic utility program to find this error? That would have probably meant you pressed the F12 when you powered on your computer? If not, try pressing the F12 key and see what that says.

Is the problem because you cannot hear anything?

Did you try your headphones also to see if any sound came out to the headphones? Speakers?

I've seen this error before and it usually means, but not always, some type of hardware problem with the motherboard. But it can also be a software problem.

You could try buying a sound card if you have an empty PCI slot in your computer. That might, or might not, do the trick.

I would also visit the Dell Community website, and any others, and ask away. You might find some good help. http://www.dellcommunity.com/

Good Luck to you!

In reviewing numerous troubleshooting websites, many many people have experienced these same error codes with various Dell computers. Only a few have said that they have finally resolved the issue, most by purchasing and installing a PCI based sound card and turning off the onboard sound. One guy states he called Dell, they said his motherboard was bad, and because he was still under warranty, they sent out a technician that replaced it, but didn't stick around long enough to find out the problem still existed. Another said that after threats of lawsuits, Dell upgraded the issue to their tier 3 technicians for further investigations, but as on 2 months ago they haven't resolved the issue by any other means.

So based on these reports, I would suggest turning off your onboard sound and installing an addon sound card from someone like Creative Labs. They aren't all that expensive and are really easy to install.

Instead of paying Dell 40$ get a new sound card coz the error code about the failed test shows that the interface between the card and the mother board is lost in other words the card has gone bad
