Benefit:

Faster reading and writing to the disk which makes certain programs faster. Some more than others.

Drawback:

10k rpm drives run really hot. You need a nice case with good cooling.

The faster drives read data faster. The 10,000 rpm WD Raptor hard drive is faster that any SATA 3.0 drive made. On paper it shouldn't be but in reality it is because of the current technology. You'd want a raptor for a gaming machine. I use 2 raptors in a Raid0 array in my gaming rig with a big SATA 3.0 for storage.

Wow can't believe I have to explain this to a gamer. Yes it makes a difference, not a HUGE difference but a noticable difference. Your maps and levels will all load faster along with models and such. Basically you'll be able to just load faster with a faster hard drive. Of course you'll want to make sure you're transfer speeds are high as well. As in SATA 2 drive.
