Our computer freezes up so we have to reboot it. When rebooting it, the computer takes forever to load. How do I get rid of some of the start up programs and just put them behind scenes?

I went in Safe Mode, Run, then typed in misconfig but error came up saying misconfig not found. Is there another way to find misconfig or startup tab?
Also my sound never works. I cannot figure out what sound device I have and I have no idea how to find out if other programs are sharing sound device. Control panel says no device found.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode, click Start > Run > msconfig > go to the startup tab and remove the checks for anything you don't want to load. Be careful--some of those things you need. Or...you could hold the Shift key down while the computer starts, which should open windows without opening any other programs.

Quite easy !

If you are using windows XP , turn the PC on and start pressing F8 till it ask you to choose a booting mode

Choose Safe Mode

The computer will boot with some ugly screen resolution, dont worry its normal , as soon as you get to your desk , go to the start menu , hit Run , and type : msconfig

a booting utility will open , go to the last tab and uncheck unwanted programs =)

If anything goes wrong just repeat these steps and then recheck unchecked things ;)

cheers
