The first screen that is supposed to show the BIOS manufacturer or so doesn't come at all. The power light is on, but the CPU light shows no sign of activity. It is only on, just like the power button. I have tried changing the memory, the monitor, no difference. Is the CPU/motherboard faulty. I slaved the HDD to another PC and cleaned any viruses. The PC was packed down for some months while I was not around. Any ideas for solutions?

Sounds like you already tried different RAM, that was my first guess too. I'd remove any hard drives and other devices except for video card + monitor + memory. See if you can get to BIOS with this minimum setup. If that works add one thing at a time to see what is bad.
If that still doesn't work it could be your CPU (or even just the CPU Fan / Heat sink - the computer will protect itself from not starting if there is no fan / heat sink sometimes) or your Motherboard. You could try your RAM / Hard drive / etc in another computer to see if works.
Have you tried taking out your BIOS battery? That will completely reset your BIOS to factory defaults.
Hopefully that helps.

sounds like the motherboard, take the panel off the side and see if there is any LED indicator lights on it. They may flash a code if there is a problem, you can find what they mean in your owner's manual.
You can also pull the cpu out and see if it looks ok, hopefully you can borrow another cpu from somone else, that way you can eliminate that as the problem.

Try a bare minimum set up. NO FDD, HDD or CD drive. Reset CMOS. Power ON. It should beep once, POST and be able to open BIOS menu. If not, try booting w/out RAM. If no endless beeps, motherboard or processor could be bad.

Try clearing your CMOS, this is what holds your BIOS settings.
If it doesn't post after clearing your CMOS, then it is some form of a hardware problem.
Unhook everything except your RAM and CPU, then see if it posts.

Work through the process of elimination.

Problem might be with Ram. Get your RAM checked once. Or replace the RAM in your motherboard and check if it is working with a new RAM. This could be one solution.

Your motherboard could be the problem (it could be cracked) or the connections are not snug.
Don't know, hard drives also could cause problems but probably not likely in this situation.
