I'm a student and will just need a desktop for word processing, browsing the internet, Email, possibly downloading music, and basic photo editing.

I'm not into gaming or anything, and I'm on a budget, so I'd want the best "bang for my buck." Can you please tell me the minimums I would need in terms of memory, RAM, etc. to get a system that will last me for awhile? Also, I'd appreciate feedback on specific brands that I should look for/avoid. Thanks!!

Don't get a high powered computer, you don't need that. Get at least 1GB of RAM, a DVD-RW, 80GB - 250GB Hard drive for data storage, 17" LCD monitor, optical mouse. Dell or HP will do you just fine. Get AVG Free anti-virus online for free.

Look For A Nice Hp Or Compaq Desktop Package. They use good products and awsome support. HP Will meet all of your needs. They have great designs and there LCD Monitors are excillent.

Get At Least 1 Gig Of Ram and many computers have 150+ GB Hard Drive

This here is a HP Mini Desktop That is 500 but doesnt include a monitor the specs are perfect for what you need. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5707024

Stay Away From eMachines and Gateway. Emachines are cheap but they use crappy parts.

From what I see including your description, you're utilising it to do some uncomplicated working stuff (surfing internet and typing works) and not utilising it for some means-hungry gaming. while you're no longer utilising it for gaming i could advise you to take utilising: a million) the two Intel Celeron D or AMD Sempron sixty 4, what sort of velocity will remember on your funds (that's the main inexpensive processor, suitable for works and on a daily basis utilization and in line with possibility, some video games) 2) A motherboard with onboard picture and sound. (Such motherboard won't value lots plus saving you the cost on picture and sound card. lower back, form of decision remember on your funds) 3) CORSAIR ValueSelect RAM (Or different varieties that are comparable). 512MB must be adequate for on a daily basis utilization, in case you have some funds to spare, get 1GB. 4) stressful disk, there are inexpensive ones too. (approximately 40GB-80GB is nice for saving of documents and a few video/song). 5) DVD Burner (Its inexpensive in recent times, should not be a issue) 6) A Eithernet Card 7) visual show unit, notebook casing, mouse and stuffs you get carry of to go searching. word: some much less means-hungry video games is nice (Eg. MapleStory or such), besides the undeniable fact that its no longer suitable for means-hungry gaming (Eg. concern or HL2). superb could be getting it from enterprise like DELL, the above is in basic terms a practise for what you should be finding for.

Since you're really not using it for much, I would just go to Dell or HP's websites, and browse around for a basic model. Or you can check your local newspaper on Sundays for weekly ads from Walmart, etc. Just stay away from anything that has a Celeron processor. Celerons are terrible! Stick with something that has a Pentium or AMD processor.

For browsing the internet, Email, downloading music, and basic photo editing you should get a Mac. They are great for all that.

If thats all youre doing, get one at a garage sale and get somebody you know to work it over for you and youre all set. Or you can get pentium 3's for under $100 in the newspaper classifieds. Your biggest challenge though is getting a good copy of windows 98SE or XP.
