a freezing computer can result from bad memory, bad hard drives or just simple over load to the system. its simple really if the computer freezes completly and does not return to its normal state it is most probably a hardware problem and you will probably want to consult a professional in solving it. if however your computer just freezes for a few moments or even several minutes and then returns the control to you it is most probably caused by too many programs running in the background and too little system resources to handle this. check to see what programs start up when you first boot into windows, by going into the start menu "programs" and "startup", you can also view the startup program if you run the command "msconfig" in the start menu and choosing the "startup" tab after which you can remove unnecessairy programs entries and stop then from loading and slowing your computer down. do not hit ctrl-alt-del and just kill programs as you most probably do not know which are vital processes and which are not, if you do take this measure use google in finding out exactly what processes you are killing.
this can also be caused by entering a cd/dvd to the drive, when windows mounts the cd/dvd file system it just halts, up to several minutes before returning control to you, its a known problem.

'Not Responding' happens when a program locks up, or tries too many functions at once. If this is a repeat issue for one program, try reinstalling that program. If this is a repeat issue for all of your programs, try closing some of them. On the bottom right corner, by the clock, is a brief list of all that is running.
This is just one suggestion, your problem may be much greater than just programs. If this problem persists, contact your computer manufacterer or seek tech support from a company that does such thing.s

Bad Motherboard or CPU: characterized by unexplained & random reboots, screen freezes, system locks. This takes me back, Way Back to A+ School, and Hands On Repairs. Your Best bet, that the CPU is going and needs replaced, since this is the cheapest of the two, try replacing it, OR make sure all cables in the tower are seated correctly and the RAM Modules are seated tightly, and if you do open the tower, AT LEAST GROUND YOURSELF BY TOUCHING AND HOLDING THE UNPAINTED BACKSIDE OF THE TOWER, And Even do this Barefooted to, will help from frying anything that you touch inside of the tower, Make sure you have it turned off, unplugged, and NO CABLES Hooked up. Safety, Safety Please.... Good Luck

The system tray only holds a very exhaustive list of what programs are running. To find a complete list (assuming you are on a windows based system) press CTRL-ALT-DEL. You should see a window with a list of all the programs running, who they belong to, and how much memory they use. Find out what program uses the most memory, and if it isn't a system program, you can usually just kill it.
