Vista is bad whatever you run it on.
Please take time to read the rest of my answer :

I work with both Ubuntu and Vista, Vista has been an expensive disappointment for me and sits mainly redundant on my hard drive and I consider Ubuntu to be far superior of the two.
I will break it down in to categories and give each system a rating out of 10.
System resource friendly :
Ubuntu 10/10
Vista 4/10
Graphics (Eye Candy) :
Ubuntu 10/10
Vista 7/10
Ease of use :
Ubuntu 7/10
Vista 9/10
Software compatability :
Ubuntu 4/10 (Open Source alternatives in some cases are available) also WINE can be used.

Vista 8/10
Wireless compatability :
Ubuntu 5/10
Vista 8/10
Networking compatability :
Ubuntu 7/10
Vista 8 /10
Security :
Ubuntu 9/10
Vista 8/10
Gaming :
Ubuntu 3/10
Vista 8/10
This category sourced from various sites.
Office software :
Ubuntu 10/10 (Free)
Vista 2 /10
Price :
Ubuntu 10/10 (Free)
Vista 2/10
Overall performance :
Ubuntu 9/10
Vista 6/10
Value :
Ubuntu 8/10
Vista 2/10
It should be noted that these ratings are based on my experience working extensively with both Ubuntu and Vista.
Of the two for me Ubuntu wins hands down.

You can ask the retailer if they will provide the computer with XP but they may not.
There is little to no difference between Vista on a laptop and Vista on a desktop. You might like having Vista on your desktop, however, as the video cards in desktops are often better and better equipped to handle the Aero interface that powers the Vista desktop.
A comparison of the different Vista editions can be found below. It is possible your desktop may end up using an edition that you end up liking more than the edition on your laptop.

I went from xp to vista, because I needed a new system. In retrospect I think I should have thought about a mac. Now I'm thinking about deleting Vista and switching to an open source/ linux (Ubuntu/Freespire) software just so that I can get out from under the tyranny of user control and junk that is Vista. Anything that was intuitive and easy in XP is dificult or imposible in Vista. I just can't make it do what I want it to do, every time I try something new it is not compatible or not properly configured.
I liked my XP but I hate my vista

Your incorrect.
Due to the unsuccessful deployment of Vista, Microsoft has extended the life of XP and is allowing big-box and on-line retailers to still offer XP as the primary O/S. To put Vista on a desktop requires the user to have a minimum of 2gb of ram just to get the O/S to function, less than 1gb of ram, hope you have a lot of time to wait around.
Want to purchase from an on-line retailer? do a insta chat to ask a representative where they are hiding their XP systems.
Before you buy your new PC, suggest you read the link below, and check out the hyperlinks. It will save you Money and Aggravation in the long term.

Vista requires lots of Memory (RAM). Get the highest you can afford, at least I GB. This may account for desktops being better - more RAM. Do a Google of system requirements for Vista.

The desktop is more scalable...thererfore you have more options with the configuration in order to better support Vista...more options means better performance e.g. graphics, memory, cooling etc. However, you need be careful with com[patibility regardless of wether you have a laptop or desktop. If you don't need Vista...stick with XP.

It's the same OS, weather it's on a desktop or a laptop makes no difference. It may run a little slower on a laptop do to the lake of resources attributed to those types of computers.
