if the hardware you attached is newer than the pc, there is problem with the detection..but somehow it could be detected still with a li'l patience on the doing..

check the cable you use, if you make it a slave to the harddisk, then you need to attach it to another cable as secondary slave or secondary master..for there are computers that are not accepting anything to share with the hdisk cable.

if your cdrom comes with an installer, then install it first for better function. and make some cold booting (but no hdisk attach..just let it run for several minutes..then off. attached the hdsk, then boot again.

if you worry about the moisture, why not try a cold boot? turn off your pc before doing this and detach cables (ide and power) in the harddisk, then turn on for at least 10-15minutes.. then turn it off again, attach hd and turn it on.. see the difference.

Moisture can affect computers if you have what is called a "condensing" atmosphere. I.e. you can see fog in your room. Actual vapor. Or near that level of humidity. It can cause serious corrosion on mid- to low-range machines that don't use gold-plated or other non-corroding contacts.

New drives can be a problem if you don't load the device driver that goes with the drive. Even a plug-n-play (Plug and pray?) system can have trouble if the added device is newer than the operating system. Not to mention that it is VERY easy to screw up the installation of a new CD-class drive. You have to get the bus jumpers right and the power supplies are also an issue. Not to mention that if is a SCSI-class CD, you have to not only connect the bus correctly, you also have to put a proper SCSI terminator on the other end of the bus.

So there are a lot of reasons. Do I smell a Geek Squad visit in your future?

try checking the control panel and go to device manager. maybe your new dvd-rom was not detected and was not properly installed.

try refreshing the device manager to enable it to detect and install the software driver that is in the CD that came along with your dvd-rom

if symptom is still the same. try contacting a good technician to install the hardware and software properly to enable it to run

good luck
