Could this be caused by never turning it off and the power supply over heating or something? Or is it time to pitch this thing?

I really want to build a new computer. My desktop has reached a state of total uselessness. I am in desperate need of a new one, but I am afraid of committing, only to find out that I will soon have to spend more money once Windows Vista and DirectX10 come out. Thanks for the help.

I support employees who continually save files (not shortcuts) to their desktop, and I was under the impression that this could cause problems with speed and/or other issues with their PC's. With the newer PC's maybe it doesn't. Looking for clarification.

I recently have had a HP desktop and laptop get messed up so I am looking in to buy a new realiable computer that won't get have to be repaired all the time. What computer brands make good computers and realiable ones. In my opinion, I like Dell a little because they usually have no problems.

This computer has been sitting in my closet for two years because i haven't been to figure what's wrong with it. let's see if you can figure it out the computer turn's on but that's it after that it does nothing else i can't seem to find anything wrong with the hard drive, ram or the motherboard? i would really like to figure this problem out myself so if your answer is take it to a computer repair shop dont bother answering.

thanks to all in advance.

everything is plugged properly --all seems to be functional--- gets past final hardware check (the ram)-- recognizes hard drive-- and justs hangs there. at this point it should go to the hdd and boot windows ? the hdd is the only hardwae thats not brand new it does function properly- and it has win xp installed. i tried to go to the bios and i can not do that either. it wont take any commands.
