when i play the music back on my ipod. What could thsi be. A dirty laser or something more fundemental?

BTW - I'm adding the music to itunes so thats the software thats doing the 'ripping'

Possibly a dirty laser... Maybe you should clean it. If it continues to do so then it might be a fundamental problem.

2 things you could try. Update or reinstall the driver for ur cd burner also try some different software as in the past i used easy cd creatr for everything and it used to do this. Now use nero and all is well again

try adjusting the sampling rate. sometimes a too high/fast sampling rate causes the software to 'guess' and thats where the screeching comes in.
May not be the problem, but it has addressed some of the same issues for me.

"Sounds" like you need to update your burner's drivers....
