I support employees who continually save files (not shortcuts) to their desktop, and I was under the impression that this could cause problems with speed and/or other issues with their PC's. With the newer PC's maybe it doesn't. Looking for clarification.

as long as their are no viruses, spyware, adware in what they download then there isn't a problem. but who knows this ahead of time? since people are famous for downloading stuff and not scanning it before they open it then i'd say you better stop them if you can.

i'm on a public library computer and download to the desktop everyday. but none of it is .exe apps. even then i scan it all before using it.

I've heard that saving actual programs to the desktop can slow a PC down, but frankly, I've never seen evidence of it. We've had employees save all of their excel (big) files etc to desktop without any problems.

I'm old school however, and recommend that people just place shortcuts on their desktop to the program. If a program self-extracts onto the desktop, man, what a mess!

Not true. Saving files to desktop is no different to saving them elsewhere. All your desktop is is a folder anyway. You just view it differently. On most computers the folder is here or an address similar: "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop"
