I really want to build a new computer. My desktop has reached a state of total uselessness. I am in desperate need of a new one, but I am afraid of committing, only to find out that I will soon have to spend more money once Windows Vista and DirectX10 come out. Thanks for the help.

Sir, forget the crap/hype and garbage about special requirements to run any operating System!
All computers have these same parts: Case, Power Supply, Motherboard, RAM, Processor, Graphic Card, Hard Drive. DVD/CD drive, floppy! Some may include sound card, TV card.
Windows Vista wants a graphic card that is not more than two years old, should have 1GB RAM and at lest 80GB hard drive.
DirectX10 is free from www.microsoft.com.
If you want to build your system now, do it. If you can put it off until the spring of next year, then wait. Not because of VISTA, but there are other issues that will be clearer by that time.
Price of a Blue RAY DVD drive for one, along with the next generation network standards.

All the stuff that I've read about Vista, don't wait, build it now, with Vista in mind, but don't upgrade to Vista for a year or two. Let the "bugs" get worked out of it first. Use XP Pro 64 or Media Center. Direct X 10 should work okay with XP Pro 64 and Media Center.

You should not wait, you should build your computer system now, and make it Vista Premium Ready (or whatever that's called). Until Windows Vista comes out (late this year, next year?) use a Linux operating system, you might even find it more stable, and it's free. I reccomend Ubuntu http://www.ubuntulinux.org. It is amazingly stable and fast. It has tools for reading and writing office documents. Either this, or you can download Windows Vista RC2 from Microsoft's website, and when the final version comes out, you should be able to easily upgrade, keeping all your programs and software. 1) The requirements for Windows Vista are known. If you build your PC to handle the new OS, then there should be no problem.
2) I waited until recently to upgrade to WinXP. The preliminary reports are that Vista may be a turkey. I would rather have a working PC with XP than worry about Vista having issues during launch.

Vista is not what I would really be concerned about, it is DirectX10. DirectX10 cards are going to be released on November 8th, so why spend money on a DirectX9 card today that will be partially obsolete in a little over a week. I would wait for the new cards, worry about Vista later.

Personally, I would not recommend upgrading or waiting for Vista. Vista offers little real improvements over XP, and DX10 is too far in the future to be concerned about anyways. Also, Vista brings with it loads of copyright restrictions and security concerns, making it more undesirable.

focus on a 3 ghz system with 2 gb memory and two 160 gb hard drives and motherboard with at least 6 usb ports with 1.x and 2.x usb ports and dvd rewriter and normal dvd drive and you should be waiting for a few years before installing windows vista as there will be service packs in future and windows vista need a new kind of display monitor and other specific requirements for it to work and usable.

build a computer that is read for windows vista and as for DirectX10 games coming out use the (OPEN GL) and the games run much better in (OPEN GL) set up the video card that has (OPEN GL ) on is ATI -video card you will find the new games that have (open GL) on them will run evern more fast then DirectX but for some games they use DirectX so all you have to do is build a pc that is ready for vista as and can take on DirectX but build it with .ATI - video card on that is 1 of the best video cards you can have on a pc i have games that have ( OPEN GL) on them and they run with speed .b/c i use the .ATI - video card in ( OPEN GL ) mode must better then DirectX . but for some games i have that dont have (open GL ) the old games they still run ok in DirectX mode /bc i have ATI - video card and 2 gb-ram & AMD 64.2 (DC) set up
